Importance and Significance of Pradhosha Vrata

An auspicious day dedicated to Lord Shiva, Pradosham falls on the 13th day (Trayodashi) of the lunar fortnight (Paksha). Pradosham Vratam occurs during the two different phases of the moon (waxing and waning) as per the traditional Hindu lunar calendar. A Pradosham falling on a Monday is called Soma Pradosh or Chandra Pradosh, on a Tuesday is known as Bhauma Pradosh, and on a Saturday is called Shani Pradosh. Among all the Pradosham vrats, the Soma Pradosh and Shani Pradosh are the most significant one observed by most devotees. The fast is observed from sunrise until sunset and is considered to be highly beneficial. To know more on the meaning and importance of Pradosham Vratam, continue glancing through the lines herein.

Pradhosha Vrata Significance

According to the Shiva Puranas, observing a fast on Pradosham Vratam is regarded as highly auspicious and beneficial. One would be blessed with wealth, children, happiness and honor. While the fast is undertaken by all Shiva devotees, but all women who have been longing for a son specially observe this. Also, praying to Lord Shiva during the course of the fast is said to liberate the devotee from all his previous and present sins and evil deeds committed. According to one legend, Lord Shiva is believed to have drunk the Halahala poison during Pradosham. This poison was mixed with the Ocean of Milk (Samudra Manthan).

Another myth relates the importance of observing this vrat with the divine couple, Lord Shiva and Parvati. On the Trayodashi day during the evening twilight, the couple is said to be in a propitious and favorable mood. Hence, all prayers and grants demanded by a sincere and loyal devotee are easily fulfilled. Additionally, Bael or Bilva leaves are offered to the Lord during this twilight period as it is regarded to be very fortunate. Hence, all stern Shiva devotees observe both the fasts that occur on two Pradosha days in a month. Such devotees consume only water during their fast and break their fast by eating Prasad after the evening prayers only.

Furthermore, they eat cooked food only from the next morning. Some devotees follow another method for fasting during Pradhosham Vratam. These eat fruits while observing the vrat and resume with eating cooked food on the same day after the evening prayers. Therefore, the strictness followed during the Pradosha fasting totally relies on the devotee. Nonetheless, there are devotees who do not observe a vrat on this day but offer prayers and worship Shiva either at home or in temples.

Why Akshaya Tritiya Is The Most Auspicious Day To Tie The Knot

Akshaya Tritiya or Akha Teej is considered to be as auspicious as any other major Hindu festival in India. It is believed to be a favourable day to start a new venture, buy something significant, and most importantly, the best day or muhurta to get married. All over the country, this day is considered auspicious for buying gold jewellery too. But, that is not all! This day holds a more important cultural and religious significance than just that.

Importance and religious significance

Akshaya means ‘eternal’ and Tritiya stands for ‘third day'. This day falls on the third day of the bright lunar fortnight of the Hindu month of Vaishakh, and so the name. It is said that holy rites, rituals and acts of charity performed on this day bring unending bliss, grace, and prosperity. The grand importance of this day roots back to Indian mythology.

Some popular beliefs and stories related to Akshaya Tritiya

It is said that the God of wealth and the treasurer of all deities, Kubera, prayed to Goddess Lakshmi on this special day, and was granted the gift of perpetual wealth and prosperity. That is why, this day is so auspicious for starting new ventures, buying a new property or gold, or getting married, as it assures prosperity and benefits. In many households, a daylong Kubera-Lakshmi puja is performed on this day.
The holy river Ganges descended on Earth from the heavens on this day.
This is the day when the sage Parshuram, the sixth incarnation of Vishnu, was born.
Treta Yug, the period of the holy Ramayana, commenced.
Ved Vyasa initiated the recital of the great Indian epic Mahabharata before lord Ganesha.
Lord Krishna’s childhood friend Sudama, visited Dwarka to him and offered him a humble gift of poha (rice flakes). Therefore, Vaishnavas (worshippers of lord Vishnu) fast throughout the day and open their fasts with rice.

Akshay Tritya Significance for couples

According to a South Indian legend, Goddess Madhura got married to God Sundaresa (an incarnation of lord Shiva) on this day. Therefore, the couples who get married on this day are blessed with eternal prosperity and bliss, by the Gods themselves. Akshaya Tritiya always sees an unprecedented rush in the number of marriages taking place in the country. There is an unmatched demand for bookings in the top tier cities of the country, and the wedding resource vendors have a field day with business pouring in from all sides.

The auspiciousness of this day arises from the belief that on this day, the Sun and the Moon are in their most radiant phase and, astrologically at an exalted position. It is believed that even the couples with mismatched horoscopes can get rid of all the negativity by getting married on Akshaya Tritiya.

In many states, mass community marriages are held under a single mandap, on the day of Akshaya Tritiya, to help the brides and the grooms with limited financial means to have a decent wedding, with all the religious splendour.

Shopping for gold

Like we mentioned before, the word Akshaya means eternal or something that cannot be destroyed. So, it is a popular belief that buying something that denotes prosperity, such as gold, on this special day, assures unending affluence and growth. If not jewellery, many people simply buy small gold coins with Goddess Lakshmi engraved on them.

About Ahoi Ashtami

Ahoi Ashtami is a festival celebrated on the 8th day of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. This festival is celebrated mostly in North India and falls approximately 4 days after Karwa Chauth and 8 days before Deepawali. This year this festival will be celebrated on 12th of October, 2017.

This festival is celebrated in the form of a fast kept by mothers for the well being of their children. This festival is also presumed to mark the beginning of Deepawali, the festival of lights. Mothers who are blessed with sons get up in the morning, like in Karwa Chauth Vrat, and put water in an earthen pot and worship Goddess Ahoi. Mothers don't eat or drink anything the whole day and in the evening, they offer Puja and Bhog to Mother Ahoi (food comprising Poori, Halwa, Chana etc) and break the fast after seeing the stars.

The difference between the fast of Ahoi Ashtami and Karwa Chauth is that Karwa Chauth Vrat is ended after seeing the Moon whereas the Ahoi Ashtami Vrat is ended after seeing the Stars. Before the Bhog of Mother Ahoi, a story of a mother having 7 sons is also narrated.

Ahoi Ashtami  Significance

Ahoi Ashtami fast is undertaken by mothers of boys for the long life and happiness of their sons. They worship Goddess Ahoi on this day with full devotion and fervour. On this day women observe a fast for their sons. The time for sighting the stars and moonrise can be seen in the Ahoi Ashtami Puja timings in the Hindu panchang.

It is believed that women who face miscarriage or have problems in conceiving should perform the Ahoi Ashtami puja and vrat to get blessed with a baby boy. For this reason, it is also known as ‘Krishnashtami’. This day is therefore significant for childless couples. On this occasion, couples take a holy dip in the ‘Radha Kunda’ at Mathura. Devotees from all over the country come and throng the place during this time.

Significance ,Legend and History of Sheetala Ashtami Vrat

Significance of Sheetala Ashtami

Sheetala Mata is known to cure ailments such as chicken-pox and small pox and measles. The Goddess seated on a donkey is seen holding neem leaves, broom, soup and a pot. Her magnificence has been mentioned in several religious scriptures. In the Skanda Purana, the benefit of worshipping Goddess Sheetala has been explained in details including Sheetala Mata Stotra or Sheetalashtak which was written by Lord Shiva. The day is dedicated to worshipping Goddess Sheetala. By worshipping the Goddess, devotees can prevent the outbreak of epidemic diseases, especially among children.

Legend of Sheetala Ashtami

A king named Indralumna was ruling Hasthinapur. His daughter Shubhakari was married to prince Gunvan. Once, the king invited them to observe Sheetal Ashtami. The couple left for a lake and performed the vrat with devotion. Pleased with their dedication, Goddess Sheetala appeared before them and granted a boon to Shuhbakari. On their way back, Shubhakari saw a family of priest grieving over the death of the priest due to snakebite. Shubhakari used the boon to revive the priest from death. Locals realised the power of the Sheetal Ashtami vrat, and they too observe the vrat with great faith.

History of Sheetala Ashtami

One story says Goddess Durga has incarnated as little Katyayani, the daughter of sage Katyayan to destroy all arrogant evil demonic forces of the world, in her real form as Durga, she killed many demons that were sent by Kaalkeya.

A demon named Jwarasur, the demon of fever, started spreading incurable diseases to Katyayani's childhood friends, such as cholera, dysentery, measles, smallpox etc. Katyayani cured the diseases of some of her friends. To relieve the world from all fevers and diseases, Katyayani assumed the form of Shitala Devi. Each of her four hands held a short broom, winnowing fan, jar of cooling water and a drinking cup. With her power, she cured all the children's diseases. Katyayani then requests her friend, Batuk to go out and confront the demon Jwarasur. A battle ensued between the young Batuk and demon Jwarasur. Jwarasur succeeds in defeating Batuk. Then, Batuk, lying dead, magically faded into dust. Jwarasur was shocked that Batuk disappeared and wondered where he went. Then, what he doesn't know that Batuk has assumed the form of an awful male figure. This person was three-eyed and had four arms. He held a battle-axe, sword, trident and demon head. He was pitch-black in color. His hair was flowing. Eyes blazed with fury. This figure wore a tiger-skin and a garland of skulls. Batuk assumed the form of Lord Shiva's ferocious form, the terrible Bhairav. Bhairav reprimands Jwarasur and tells him that he is the servant of Goddess Durga (Katyayani). A long discussion ensued but then converted into battle. Jwarasur created many demons from his powers but Bhairav managed to destroy all of them. Finally, Bhairav wrestled with Jwarasur and killed him with his trident.

Dhanurmas Date 2016-17

Dhanurmas is the 30-day period of Sun’s transition from Dhanu Rasi (Sagittarius) to Makar Rasi (Capricorn). Dhanurmas 2016 – 2017 is from December 16, 2016 to January 13, 2017. Dhanurmas is not an independent month in most of the Indian calendars calendars except for the Malayalam calendar followed in Kerala. In Malayalam calendar the month from mid December to mid January is known as Dhanu Masam.

Dhanurmas is a combination of two words, Dhanur which is a sun sign Sagittarius and Mas means month. A month in which the sun enters the Sagittarius and stays with it is considered as Dhanurmas. As per Indian Astrology the sun stays with one of the sun signs every month. This month ends on the day of Bhog, just a day before Sankranti or Makara Sankranti. Dhanurmas is a very auspicious month for Vaishnavites. Dhanurmas lasts for 30 days and all these 30 days are most sacred for Vaishnavites. Special rituals and poojas are preformed to seek the blessings of Lord Vishnu.

Significance and Importance Dhanurmas

Margazhi is the most beautiful month in the Tamilnadu. Lord Krishna says that he is the month of Margazhi from which one can imagine the beauty and sanctity of this month. Visiting temple in the early hours during the month would be auspicious, which is the tradition old followed by our people over the ages, and it has been proven scientifically that the Ozone layer will be closest to the earth during the month of Marghazi (Sanskrit name of month : Dhanus) which makes our health normal, while having breathing the fresh air in the early morning. All the temples in the month will be open in the early morning and special poojas are conducted to the deities.During the month of Margazhi, Andal recited 30 versus of Thiruppaavai and followed the Paavai Nombu and attained Lord Mahavishnu.

Manickkavasagar, the saint, recited Thiruvempaavai on Lord Shiva. In these verses, the sait himself visualizes as a Women and sings those verses in the praise of his Lord Shiva during early hours of Margazhi.Again all these are being followed to ensure that people get benefited by the pure oxygen early in the morning!

The eleventh day after the new moon and the full moon is called Ekadasi and we are supposed to follow the vratham of avoiding rice and eating light on these days. Even if the vratham is not observed on all Ekadasis, it is important to follow it on Vaikunta Ekadasi. Vaikunta Ekadasi is the eleventh day of the waxing moon. Ever year all temples of Mahavishnu have the beautiful ritual of “Sorgavaasal” (Heavenly Entrance) on the early morning of Vaikunta Ekadasi and the whole day is celebrated on a grand scale in these temples.

Thiruvadhirai is the star of Lord Shiva and this festival is celebrated in His honour. Arudhra Darsanam is celebrated on the full moon day of Margazhi with special abhishekams to the Siva lingams on the eve of Arudra Natchatra and special alangarams and pujas on the day. The celebrations at Chidambaram are the best with special pujas to the deity Nataraja.

There is also a scientific meaning, which explains the greatness of the Margazhi month. During this month, the ozone layer will be lowered a little bit and because of this, any disease will reduce and gives a healthy body. Let us now what are the main benefits of this Margazhi month and the Thiruppaavai.

Gita Jayanti Significance

The Bhagavad Gita is considered by many Hindus to be the holiest of all the scriptures in Hinduism. It is one of the most often quoted Hindu scriptures within Indian (and perhaps even Western) literature. The Gita is a central treatise of the expansive epic, the Mahabharata. It is often referred to as the jewel in the crown of hindu philosophy and religious thought. The Gita consists of 18 Chapters and 700 verses that formed the discourse given to Prince Arjuna of the Pandava dynasty by Lord Krishna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra.

gita-132.jpg - While the Bhagavad Gita is considered by some to be the Bible of Hinduism, “the teachings of the Gita are broad, sublime and universal. They do not belong to any particular cult, sect, creed, age, place or country. They are meant for all. They are within the reach of all. The Gita has a message for the solace, peace, freedom, salvation and perfection of all human beings.”

Prince Arjuna was overcome by doubt and fear as he faced the prospect of doing battle with his half-brothers, gurus and friends. Lord Krishna, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, removed his doubts by teaching him about the four-fold yoga's of karma (action), bhakti (devotion), gyana (devotion) and prema (love).

Rama Ekadashi Significance

According to the scriptures, there was a king named Muchukunda. He ruled a prosperous kingdom and counted Lord Indra, Lord Varuna and Lord Kuber among his friends. He was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu and was blessed with a baby girl who was named Chandrabhaga. She was later married to Prince Shobhana who was son of King Chandrasen.

Chandrabhaga used to observe a fast on Ekadashi so she followed the tradition at her parent-in- laws house too. She asked her husband to keep the Ekadashi fast along with her. Shobhana used to feel physically weak so he refused to keep the fast, which made Chandrabhaga upset. He realized her dismay so he kept the fast, but soon started suffering from hunger and thirst. The prince could not survive the fast so he died before the morning.

By the virtue of Rama Ekadashi, Shobhana received a great but invisible kingdom. Once, a Brahmana of his wife’s kingdom went out to travel, when he came across the kingdom on his way. Shobhana told him, that by the grace of Rama Ekadashi, he received the kingdom. He asked the Brahmana to tell his wife abut his kingdom. Sharad Purnima (Kojagari Purnima) Legends and Significance

Sharad Purnima is also known as 'Kojagari Punam'. It is believed Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth moves around in the night sky, asking `Ko jaagarti' searching for people below who are awake. In Sanskrit, `Ko jaagarti' means, ' Who is awake,' And to those who are awake she gifts wealth.Sharad Purnima is a harvest festival celebrated on full moon day of the Ashvin month, the seventh month in the Hindu calendar.

According to Shrimad Bhagwat on Sharad Purnima night Lord Krishna invited his faithful devotees, the Gopis of Vrindavan, to play the Maha Ras (traditional folk-dance) with Him. Describing the Maha Raas Leela' in the Bhagwat, Sukhdev narrates to king Parikshit: 'O Parikshit! Of all nights, that night of Sharad Purnima became the most resplendent. With the Gopis, Shri Krishna roamed the banks of the Yamuna, as if imprisoning everyone in His leela!'

Since moon is closest to the earth on Sharad Purnima day, according to Ayurveda the Sharad Purnima moon rays have several curative properties, hence Poha, puffed rice, and kheer, sweet, is prepared and left in the moonlight of Sharad Purnima and is consumed later.

People who keep a fast on Sharad Purnima are supposed to break their fast at night by eating rice flakes and cold milk. The practice of drinking cold milk during this fast has its origins in science. Sharad Ritu (Autumn Season) brings in very hot days and cool nights. During this weather, ‘pitta' or acidity becomes predominant in our body. Consumption of milk & rice flakes is a good remedy for ‘pitta'. Thus, it is customary to consume cold milk and rice flakes on Sharad Purnima.

Thus, Sharad Purnima or Kojagari Purnima is an important Hindu festival. It marks the end of monsoon and ushers in the season of autumn. It is the celebration of the day when the moon gets closest to the Earth. Along with that worshipping Goddess Lakshmi signifies the importance of good harvests and prosperity in the lives of the farmers. They seek blessings of the divine power to achieve good results for the hard work they have put in.

Sharad Purnima in Orissa: In Orissha, Sharad Purnima is also known as Kumar Purnima and Lord Kartikeya is worshipped by the unmarried girls. Girls who want to get a handsome husband like Kartikeya take bath early in the morning, offer food to the Sun and keep a fast throughout the day. In the evening when the moon rises they offer food and prayers to the moon.

Sharad Purnima Significance

Sharad Purnima is celebrated in different regions with different names and for different reasons. According to Hindu mythology, on the night of Sharad Purnima, lord Krishna played the famous raas leela with Radha and the gopis.

Another popular belief is that, goddess Lakshmi was born on the night of Sharad Purnima, which is why several Hindus worship goddess Lakshmi on the full moon night. According to a folklore, once a king was in great financial strait and to help him, his wife observed a fast and worshipped goddess Lakshmi. Goddess Lakhsmi got impressed and blessed the king and the queen and they regained their prosperity. Since then, it is believed that goddess Lakshmi visits places to give her blessings. People make kheer, an Indian sweet dish, and offer paan, makhan. Ideally, the kheer is kept outside under the moonlight and is distributed among the family members the next day.

The festival is called Sharad Poonam in Gujarat and is celebrated by playing garba and dandiya raas. In Mithila, it is known as Kojagaraha Purnima and goddess Kali is also worshipped. In West Bengal, it is celebrated as Lokkhi Pujo after Durga Puja.
