Devshayani Ekadashi is also known by the name Ashadh Shukla Paksha Ekadashi, Ashadi Ekadashi, Hari Shayani Ekadashi, Maha-Ekadashi and Prathama Ekadashi. Chaturmas, the holy period of four months when Lord Vishnu goes to sleep usually begins after Devshayani Ekadashi.

Devshayani Ekadashi usually begins days after the Puri Rath Yatra. Padarpur Yatra in Maharashtra too concludes on this day. Pilgrims in Maharashtra observe Devshayani Ekadashi with religious fervor. Main celebration occurs in Lord Vithal temple. Lord Vital is considered an incarnation of Lord Krishna.

Devshayani Ekadashi  Historic Significance 

Religious scriptures have it that the significance of Devshayani Ekadashi was first explained by Lord Krishna to Yudhisthira. A King by the name of Mandata had to face drought for three years in a row in his kingdom. This created a precarious condition and the residents of the kingdom had to face hard times. Rivers dried out and man and animal suffered immensely. The King saddened by the happenings in his kingdom embarked on a journey to seek some solution for his people.

The King wished to appease the Rain Gods and met Rishi Angiras to seek a solution. The King was supposed to keep a fast on Devshayani Ekadashi alongwith the entire population of the kingdom as advised by the rishi. Lord Vishnu blessed the kingdom and heavy rains occurred following the religious devotion shown by the King and his peasants. With rains came prosperity and the people lived happily thereafter.

It became a ritual since then to fast on this auspicious day as this brought prosperity and luck to those who showed religious devotion.

Devshayani Ekadashi Celebration

Devotees get divine blessings of Lord Vishnu on Devshayani Ekadashi if they observe the day with utmost devotion. An ardent devotee is able to attain salvation if fasting is done in true earnest. Fasting on Devshayani Ekadashi helps devotees fulfil their wishes and help them attain freedom from any of the sins they have committed in the past.

Fasting on Devshayani Ekadashi also helps one strengthen the self control and become emotionally stable. Many devotees of Vishnu fast for 2 consecutive days. However, the fasting on the second day is suggested only for those who wish to attain Sanyas (salvation) in the long run. Widows and those looking forward to attaining Moksha too can go for the second day fast in Devshayani Ekadashi. 

 

Devshayani Ekadashi Rituals

 

Taking a holy bath is considered to be very auspicious on Dev Shayani Ekadashi. Devotees in large number gather at Nasik, to take a dip in the Godavari River, in the honour of Sri Rama, an avatar of Lord Vishnu.

On the day of Shayani Ekadashi, devotees keep a fast by refraining from specific foods like rice, beans, grains, cereals, specific vegetables and spices. By keeping a fast on this day, the observer will be able to resolve all the problems or tensions in life.

Lord Vishnu is worshipped on Shayani Ekadashi. Devotees decorate the idol of Lord Vishnu with Gadha, Chakra, Shank and bright yellow clothes. Incense sticks, flowers, betel, betel nut and Bhog are presented as offerings. After the puja ritual, aarti is sung and the prasad is eaten together with other devotees.

On Dev Shayani Ekadashi, the observer of this vrat must remain awake all night and chant religious bhajans or songs in praise of Lord Vishnu. Reciting religious books like ‘Vishnu Sahartanaam’ is also considered very auspicious.

As per a story in the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Bhima decided to observe a fast on all Ekadashis. However, true to his nature, he soon felt ravenous and wondered what to do. Muni Vyasa advised him to observe just one ekadashi, the Nirjala Ekadashi, which would fetch him the virtues of having observed all 24 ekadashis, this one being the toughest.Bhima did perform Nirjala Ekadasi. But, as expected, he became unconscious by next morning. He was offered water from the river Ganga along with the holy tulsi leaves to revive him and also break his fast.

Lakhs of devotees gathered at Lord Vitthal Temple Pandharpur, on the occasion of 'Ashadhi Ekadashi'. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and his wife Amruta performed a 'maha-puja' (grand prayer) at the Lord Vitthal temple in Pandharpur early today.

“Feeling blessed and positive,” Fadnavis said, after the early morning ritual.

Ekadashi marks the culmination of pilgrimage, called ‘waari’, that devotees undertake from across the state on foot to reach the temple town.

In Mumbai, large crowds gathered at the Vitthal temple in Wadala to perform ‘puja’ on the auspicious occasion.

Once upon a time, there lived a religious king named Mahidhvaj. His younger brother, Bhrajdhvaj, was a cruel, sinner and unjust person. He used to hate Mahidhvaj. One night he killed his elder brother. And he buried the dead body beneath a Pipal tree. Now he started showing violence to the Pipal tree. Accidentally, one day, a Rishi named Dhumya passed from there. Then, Rishi advised him to observe the fast of Apara Ekadashi and get free from all his sins, in order to live a peaceful life. 

Apara Ekadashi Vrat Puja Vidhi

Wake up early, take bath and offer prayers.
Offer fruits and Tulsi while worshipping Lord Vishnu.
Do not pick leaves from Tulsi plant on this day. (Collect leaves a day before.)
Visit nearby Vishnu temple.
Recite Vishnu Sahasranama or simply chant “Om Namo Narayana”.
Observe self-control, do Maun-Japa i.e. repeat Lord’s name in mind.
Arrange Satsang and Bhajan.

Apara Ekadashi Vrat Fast

Apara Ekadashi Vrat begins from sunrise and continues till the sunrise of the next day.

After completing all the basic activities of the day, take bath and wear clean clothes.

Offer prayers to Lord Vishnu with a clear mind, heart, and soul. Please the Lord with offering of Tulsi leaves and fresh fruits on Apara Ekadashi.

While observing Apara Ekadashi Vrat, avoid intake of grains, non-vegetarian food, and alcohol.

Ekadashi comes on every 11th tithi in Hindu Calendar. Two Ekadashi occur in one month according to positions of the moon, One during shukla (bright) Paksha and another during krishna (dark) Paksha.

The day of Ekadashi, people take an ideally waterless fast from sunrise on the Ekadashi day to sunrise on next day. Hindu scriptures teach to keep avoid all beans and all grains on this day because these two foods are tainted by sin, one should eat only fruits and vegetables and milk products on this day.

About Apara Ekadashi 

Apara Ekadashi is a fasting day for Hindus falls in the Jayestha month (May-June) that is observed on the 11th day (‘Ekadashi’) of the Krishna Paksha (the dark fortnight of the moon) of the Hindu month Jyeshtha. On this day, Lord Vishnu is worshipped, and people also offer Tulsi leaves to Lord Vishnu.

On the day of Apara Ekadashi, devotees of Lord Vishnu observe a strict fast which is broken on the next day, i.e., on dwadashi day during the parana time. Those who are unable to keep a whole day fast keep a partial fast by consuming fruits and milk and avoid eating rice and other grains for the whole day.  

Apara Ekadashi Significance

The significance of this auspicious day is stated in the ‘Brahma Purana’. Apara Ekadashi or Jalakrida Ekadashi is observed with full devotion, all across the country. It is known by the different names in various regions of India. In the state of Haryana, Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir, this special day is celebrated as ‘Bhadrakali Ekadashi’ & worshipping Maa Bhadra Kali is considered auspicious on this day.It is referred as ‘Jalakrida Ekadashi’ in the region like Orissa and is celebrated in honour of Lord Jagannath. However, in the rest part of India, Apara Ekadashi is celebrated to please Lord Vishnu.  

Apara Ekadashi  Celebrations and Rituals

Devotees need to be cautious while performing Apara Ekadashi vrat. All the rituals must be performed with devotion and dedication. Devotee should get up before sunrise and take a bath. Offer Tulsi leaves, flowers, dhoop and lamp to Lord Vishnu. Sweets are prepared at home and offered to the Lord. The devotees also recite the Apara Ekadashi vrat Katha or story along with Vishnu Sahastranaam Stotra. After performing the ‘Aarti’,‘Prasad’ is distributed among the family members. The devotees also visit temples of Lord Vishnu. The fast of this Ekadashi begins on the ‘dashami’ (10th day). The person can eat only one meal on the 10th day. Many devotees keep strict fast and spend the day without eating or drinking anything. Partial vrat can also be kept by those who are unfit. They can eat fruits. The fast starts at sunrise and ends on the sunrise of the ‘dwadashi’ (12th day). Eating grains and rice is prohibited on Apara Ekadashi. Applying oil on the body is also not allowed. Devotees should keep the mind free from all negative thoughts. He should not tell lies or speak badly about others. Their mind should only have thoughts of Lord Vishnu. The Devotees must be engaged in bhajans and kirtans in praise of Lord Vishnu on the day of Apara Ekadashi.

Kamda Ekadashi | Kamada Ekadashi Vrat 

The Ekadashi of Chaitra Masa Shukla Paksha is called the Kamada Ekadashi.Kamada Ekadashi falls in the month of Chaitra during the waxing phase of the moon (Shukla Paksha) according to the traditional Hindu calendar.The word ‘Kamada’ means ‘fulfilment of all desires’. With the potential of eradicating one’s sins and mistakes, Kamada Ekadashi helps in attaining Swargaloka (heaven) after death. This meritorious fast is also known to bless the married couples with the pleasure of having their own child.

The devotees keep fast for the entire day and are forbidden to take rice. They sing prayers and do ‘Japa’ and devote the entire day in the name of Lord Vishnu. The Hindu society especially the Vaishavas celebrates this festival. Two ekadashis occur in one month considering the position of the moon. This is considered to be an auspicious time and if one wishes to commence some new event, then this is the perfect day.

Begin and spend your day with a clear mind and pure and pious thoughts
Stay away from taking alcohol and non-vegetarian food while observing Kamada Ekadashi Vrat
