Informatio about Saphala Ekadasi

Ekadasi refers to two days a month, the eleventh day after the new moon and the eleventh day after the full moon. among them Saphala Ekadashi is the day to fetch the blessings of Lord Vishnu. The day of Saphala Ekadashi is sacred to Hindus as it is believed that by fasting sincerely on this day, the devotees can wash away their sins and also enjoy a blissful life. Ekadashi is a revered day that occurs twice in every lunar Hindu month and is a day dedicated to worshipping the preserver of this Universe, who is none other than Lord Vishnu.

Traditionally, all Vaishnavas abstain from grains and beans on Ekadasi, taking only water, milk, or fruits. Many fast completely from all food and water. With the time saved by avoiding any elaborate cooking arrangements, some chant extra japa and/or spend more time reading Srimad-Bhagavatam or other scriptures.

Legend has it that Lumbaka, one of the four sons of a famous king, was always questioning the authority of Lord Vishnu. Due to this attitude, he was exiled. Lumbaka continued with his behavior and started plundering the wealth of poor villagers and made his home under a banyan tree. He started eating killing animals and ate the raw meat.

Saphala Ekadasi Story

Once upon a time there lived a powerful king who had four sons. King was an ardent follower of Lord Vishnu and so was his whole family, except his son, ‘Lumbaka’. He always use to doubt the existence of the Lord and question his authority. Due to this misbehavior, he was thrown out of the kingdom, this further infuriated him. He started living in the forests and killing and eat animals. One fine day, he felt sick and could not eat or drink anything the whole day. When he woke up the next day, he was feeling much better and felt peace and serenity. An astonished ‘Lumbaka’ went to a great sage who in return told him that since that sacred day was of ‘Saphala Ekadashi’ and unknowingly he had observed fast and had stayed awake the whole night , he had thus been blessed by Lord Vishnu. ‘Lumbaka’ ultimately realized the importance of the deity and found true happiness. He returned back to his kingdom, apologized to his father and lived happily ever after.

Saphala Ekadasi Mantra

“Ashvmedhsahastrani Rajsuyashtani ch, Ekadashyupavasasya kalaam naharnti shodshim”.

Means that not even a thousand ‘Ashvamedha Yagya’ or a hundred ‘Raja Suya Yagas’ would match the blessing one will receive if he/she observes a fast on the Ekadashi day.
