About  Dev Uthani(Prabodhini) Ekadashi Vrat

Dev Uthani Ekadashi Vrat is one of the most important and sacred Ekadashis in Hinduism. It is also known as Prabodhini Ekadashi .Prabodini Ekadashi Vrat  or Dev Uthani Ekadasi Vrat is observed on the eleventh day during the Shukla Paksha or waxing phase of moon in Kartik Month as per traditional Hindu Lunar Calendar.  

On Utthana Ekadasi Vrat day, an image of Lord Vishnu is drawn on the ground. Lamps are lit around it and fruits and vegetables are offered to this fresh image.In some regions the image is covered with a big brass plate symbolizing that He is sleeping. Bhajans dedicated to Lord Vishnu is sung and he is asked to shed his sleep and wake up and bless people.To wake the Lord, children light mustard torches at night and make lot of noise.

On Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi Vrat day some people observe strict fasting and do not even drink water.In most other regions all the usual rituals associated with Ekadasi fasting are followed.Those observing partial fasting eat fruits and avoid grains and rice.

How To Observe Dev Uthani Ekadashi Vrat 

Legends state that the consort of Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi was unsatisfied with the way Lord Vishnu slept. Sometimes, he remained awakened for days and sometimes, he slept continuously for several days. Hence, Goddess Lakshmi visited Lord Vishnu and complained about his indiscipline followed. She also informed him that several lords, such as Lord Shiva, Lord Brahma, Devas and Saints, are forced to wait for many days in order to meet him. Hence, they returned disappointed without having Lord Vishnu's Darshan. Furthermore, this neutral situation of Lord Vishnu is highly taken advantage of by the demons. They make the most of this opportunity in causing pain to human beings, thereby leading to the spread of Adharma on earth. After patiently listening to Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Vishnu replied that he would soon come up with a solution. Meanwhile, the Devas and Saints visit Lord Vishnu and inform him about the robbery of the Vedas by a Demon named Shankhyayan. The demon had committed this act in order to deprive the human beings about the knowledge of the Vedas and spread Adharma all around. On hearing this, Lord Vishnu promised the sages that he would get back the Vedas. After fighting for several days with Demon Shankhyayan, he was successful in getting the Vedas back. He returned the Vedas to Goddess Lakshmi, Devas and Saints. Additionally, he insisted on continuing with a long sleep but only for four months. This sleep started from Ashadha Shuddha Ekadashi until Kartik Shuddha Ekadashi, which is also known as Prabhodhini Ekadashi or Dev Uthani Ekadashi. Various pujas and prayers are carried on this day dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The important Pandarpur Yatra also takes place on this day in Lord Vithal Temple. The most popular Tulsi Vivah Festival and Shaligram Puja rituals also commence on Prabhodhini Ekadashi in some regions while in other communities, they take place on the day after Ekadashi. By observing the Prabhodhini Ekadashi vrat, devotees believe that they would be able to get rid off their sins and attain salvation, or Moksha. At some places, devotees observe a complete fast, that is, they do not eat anything or even drink water on this day.

Manav Ekta Divas is celebrated all over world.Sant Nirankari Mission celebrated “Manav Ekta Divas” on Friday to mark the sacrifice of its former spiritual head Baba Gurbachan Singhji.The Mission plans to organise 281 blood donation camps across the country this year. Ninety-six of these were organised on Friday. In Delhi, a camp was inaugurated by Baba Hardev Singhji Maharaj where 1,100 devotees of the Mission donated blood.

Baisakhi is a seasonal festival with a special accent.Thought widely known all over India Baisakhi is the originally celebrated in Punjab.This is the time when harvest is gathered in and the farmers are jubilant over fulfillment of their hard farming work.They are in mood of merry-marking and walk miles to participate in Baisakhi fair.Since these fairs are also an expression of  prosperity,singing and dancing constitute its most enchanting features.

The Punjab's famous dance of Bhangra and Giddha are inextricably linked with this festival.Many fairs in the Punjab are held near the tombs and shrines of pirs.These fairs must have originated in a spirit of devotion to those saints and sages.The most famous among such fairs are the Chhapar fair,the Jarag fair,and the Roshni fair of Jagranyan.

Baisakhi marks the beginning of the New Year ,particularly in the northern part of India.Ti is one of few Indian festivals  that have a fixed date.Baisakhi comes on 13 April month.In Kerala, Baisakhi is called as 'Vishu' and in Tamil Nadu ,it is celebrated as 'puthandu'.Being considered a holy day, the devout celebrate the Baisakhi with a dip in the holy rivers usually at down.It is on this day that sun enters Aries,the first sign of Zodiac ,which signifies ushering of the New Year.

Specially in Punjab ,(the land of Green Revolution) and in the northern belt of India in general,farmers offer their prayers and rejoice.For ,on this day they commence reaping their harvest.The fields can be seen full of nature's bounty.Dressed in their typical folk attire ,both men and women ,enjoy the day with Bhangra and Gidda.Sweets are distributed people embrace one another forgetting their differences.Everywhere there are people ;giving vent to the joy; they feel in their hearts.

Baikskhi ,however ,has attained a new dimension as Guru Gobind Singh ,on the very day of Baisakhi in 1669 ,had established the Khalsa Panth,and gave a final impetus to the course of the earlier nine Gurus of Sikhism.

A rural festival of North India,marking the beginning of the solar year (New Year), Baisakhi is celebrated in Punjab with great fervour.For the Sikhs in particular the day is a combination of New Year and the commemoration of the Khalsa Panth(Sikh brotherhood).It also signifies the end of harvest of the main crop.During Baisakhi the farmers give thank to the Lord Almighty for their fortune and prey for a better crop in the coming year.Baisakhi witnesses a lot of socialising with friends ,and relatives are invited and delicious meals are served.

The Holy book of the 'Granth Sahib' is taken in the procession,led by the 'Panj Pyaras'.(five senior Sikhs) who are symbolic of the original leaders.The occasion is celebrated with great gusto at Talwandi Sabo,where Guru Gobind Singh stayed for nine months and and completed the recompilation of the Guru Granth Sahib in the Golden Temple in Amritsar.On the day of Baisakhi ,water is drawn from all the sacred rivers of India,and poured into the huge tank surrounding the Golden Temple.
