One of Mumbai’s most famous Ganpati pandals, Lalbaugcha Raja witnesses a footfall of over 2 crores over the span of 10 days. This Ganeshotsav marks the 85th year of the pandal’s existence. In 1934, fishermen and vendors in the Lalbaug-Worli area set up the first idol here, and since then, the Lalbaugcha Raja pandal has grown to attract lakhs of devotees from across the country and globe. It is open for darshan around the clock from 6am on 13 September to 10am on 22 September 2018. Lalbagcha Raja Ganeshotsav 2018 will be inaugurated on Thursday 13th September 2018, early morning 4.00 AM by the Mandal’s President Mr.Balasaheb Sudam Kamble. The same will be further followed by Pratishthapana Puja.
Post the Puja, Lalbagcha Raja 2018 darshan will be opened to all the devotees from early morning 6.00 AM onwards and the Lalbaugcha Raja souvenir for 2018 will be published.
The Morning aarti will take place at 12.30 PM, by the Mandal’s President Mr.Balasaheb Sudam Kamble. The Evening aarti will take place at 08.30 PM.

Mukh Darshan line will take the following route:- Chhatrapati Shivaji Ground (Garam Khada) – Dr. B. A. Road – Dattaram Lad Marg – T.B. Kadam Marg – Add’l C.P. office – Dr. B. A. Road – RANI BAUG on Central Line. To reach here one can come from Chinchpokali or Byculla Station. (Depending upon the length of the line) The Mukh Darshan queue is also reachable from Cotton Green Station on Harbour Railway.)

Lalbaugcha Raja in Mumbai is one of the most popular Ganpati Pandals in Mumbai during Ganeshotsav. Lalbaugcha Raja is one of the oldest sarvajanik (public) Ganesh festivals of Mumbai established in 1934 located at GD Ambedkar Road, Lalbaug ,central Mumbai.Lalbagcha Raja known as "The Emperor of Lalbaug" is name of the popular Ganesh Idol of "Lalbagcha Raja Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal ".The Mandal, formerly known as “Sarvajanik Ganeshitav Mandal, Lalbag” was founded in the year 1934, at its existing place. With the consistent efforts & support of the then local Councillor-Late Shri. Kuwarji Jethabhai Shah, Dr. V. B. Korgaonkar and the local residents, the landlord Rajabai Tayyabali agreed to give a plot for construction of a market.
Lalbaugcha Raja is Mumbai’s famous Ganesha idol and large number of crowd turns out for darshan (Worship) during the 10-day long Ganesh Mahotsav. It is expected that around six lakh people will visit the Lalbaugcha Raja idol each day.According to the sources, a devotee will have to wait 10 hrs to reach the idol. The queue is expected to eight-km long from the pandal.
During "Quit India" movement by Mahatma Gandhi, in 1942, the members of the Mandal viz. Kuwarji Jethabhai Shah, Dr. V.B. Korgaonkar, Hatle etc. were arrested by the British due to the involvement of the Mandal in the freedom struggle. During these years, the Ganesh idol was shown in the get-ups of different freedom fighters. In 1946, it was depicted as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. In 1947, to celebrate Independence, the Ganesh idol was in Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's get-up riding a bullock-cart. In 1948, after assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, the Ganesh idol was his look-alike.
The Madal has prepared a massive float for Lalbaugcha Raja’s immersion ceremony. The massive float will help the immersion of Lalbaugcha Raja in deep sea. On the other hand, thick security arrangements have been made in the wake of possible terror threat. The Mumbai Police has deployed around 1600 policemen while the Lalbaugcha Raja Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal has its own 6000 guards.

Ganesh Chaturthi Festival or Ganesh Utsav is celebrated all over India, but the maximum grandeur is witnessed in Mumbai and across Maharashtra.During the Ganesh Chaturthi Festival or Ganesh Utsav ,clay idols of Ganesha are specially prepared and most families in Maharashtra instal an idol in their homes for periods varying from two days to eleven days.Every morning and evening , prayers(Aarti) are performed and hymns are sung.The singing of hymns is a popular event especially for children.The hymns are sung to the clanging of small gongs(Jhanjar) , the sounds of which reverberate throughout the day.But the main puja is performed during the forenoon.
A Special feature of the celebrations in Maharashtra and a few other states is the performance of Shri Satyanarayana Puja on the days.Al thought this Puja is normally performed on a full moon day, when it is a prayer to Lord Vishnu it is performed on any convenient day during the Ganesh Chaturthi Celebration.
To appreciate this occasion ,one must go to Mumbai where preparations begin months in advance .Images of Ganesha are installed individually at homes as well as in public places.Elaborate arrangements are made for lighting and decoration and Ganesha is fervently worshiped for about 7-10 days.On the day of the Chaturthi, the last of the days dedicated to the elephant haded god ,thousands of processions converge on the beaches of Mumbai to immerse the holy idols in the sea.This immersion is a accompanied by drumbeats, devotional songs and dancing.Every year , the largest Ganesha idol is installed at Khairatabad in Hyderabad, which which is more than 30 ft tall.The Ganesha Mahotsav or the Grand festival of Ganesha is the principal festival in Mumbai, the financial capital of India.In Mumbai factories commission the largest of the 6000 or so Ganeshas collectively.Each of these idols can be upto 10 meters in hight, and are prepared on lorries decorated with multi-colored lights.Moreover , small idols of Lord Ganesha are placed in nukkads or street corners and in homes, and pujas are performed daily.The festival started by Shivaji , the great Maratha rular, to promote culture and a feelings of nationalism amongst his subjects who were fighting against the Mughals.After his death the festival was celebrated , but on a smaller scale.In 1894 when the British banned public assemblies, Lokmanaya Bal Gangadhar Tilak considering it the way of spreading the freedom message revied this festival.Ganesha is the god of learning.He is addressed as the 'Remove of Obstacles'(" Vighnaharta").People believe that no enterprise will succeed unless he is invoked.The picture of Ganesha is often found on the doors of houses and printed on wedding cards.During the processions and while immersing people sing," GANPATI BAPPA MORYA, AGLE BARAS TO JALDI AA,"(father Ganesha , next year come again.)
According to the local civic body, total 1, 91,000 idols were installed across the Mumbai city every year of which about 10,350 are at Sarvajanik Ganesh Mandals and 1,80,650 belong to local households.The Lalbaugcha Raja in central Mumbai is the biggest draw. Although the idol in the cramped fish market remains the same each year, corers of devotees flock to this much-hyped pandal to seek boons from the wish-fulfilling deity. Over the years, offerings in gold and silver have increased in direct proportion to high-profile celebrity visits and constant media coverage.

The Story of Lord Ganesha
The Story of how Lord Ganesha came to have an elephant's head is well known.parvati's motherly instincts
made her yearn for a son and Shiva's long absence from home intensified her yearning due to loneliness.One day, a bright idea occurred to her.She decided to mould a statue of clay in the form of a son.She used her divine power to have the company of a son, she went about her chores, often leaving the boy in charge of the house.
One fine day , while Parvati was busy with her daily ablutions, Shivaturned up and saw Parvati's son Ganesha, guarding the entrance to his house.Strangers as they were to each other, the son(Ganesha) refused to allow Shiva to enter the house.Taken aback at being prevented fron entering his own house ,Shiva asked this tiny sentinel who he was.On being told that he was parvati's son, Shiva was enraged.
In a fit of anger, Shiva chopped off his head and threw it away. When Parvati heard about this outrage, she lost her temper and demanded that Shiva restore her son to life immediately.Compelled to appease Parvati, Shiva set out to find the head of her son.Hard as he tried, he could not find the heard he wanted , he thought of fitting the headless body with the head of any living being that he would come across.Having so resolved he came across a baby elephant and true to his word, Shiva chopped off the elephant's head, and fitted it to the lifeless body of Ganesha and revived him.This was how Lord Gajanana or Gaja-Mukha came into being.

Those who recite, read or listen to the above mentioned sixteen names of Lord Ganesha will not face any obstacles at any time be it initiation to schooling, performance of marriage, Grihapravesh, setting out on a journey, or meetings.These names are also used in the prayers addressed to Ganesha during his worship. The 16 names of Ganesha are:
