Lohri Festival Recipes | Ganee Ki Kheer | Makke ke Roti | Kurmura Ladoo

Lohri is marked by a range of traditional exciting activities like lighting the ritualistic bonfire, dancing to the beats of dhol, singing popular folklore, flying kites and enjoying a scrumptious feast.In feast people make different types of recipes.Here is we serve some Lohri special Recipes like Makke ki Roti,Ganne Ki Khir and Kurmura Ladoo.

Ganee Ki Kheer

                                          

Ingredients

1 liter Sugarcane juice
100g of Basmati rice
Cardamom Powder
Cut Dry Fruits

Method

Wash the rice and soak it in water.
Put 1 liter of sugarcane juice in a pan and bring to boil.
Now add the soaked rice and cardamom to the sugarcane juice and let it cook on a slow fire.
Keep on stirring.
Cook till the rice and sugarcane juice form a smooth mixture.
Remove it from the flame and allow it to cool before serving.

Makke ke Roti

Ingredients 

2 cups makki ka atta (millet-maiza flour)    

Warm water for dough

1/2 tsp salt

Method

Mix the maize flour and salt in a shallow plate. Make a "Well" in the centre; add a little water at a time to knead the flour into a dough.

Divide into equal-sized balls. Put a square sheet of foil on the surface on which rotis will be made. Lightly flour the surface. Put a ball of the kneaded dough on the paper and cover with another piece of foil. Press with the ball of your palm till it becomes size of a roti. Remove the foil cover and transfer the roti to a hot skillet.

Cook on low heat, turning till both sides are roasted. Serve with butter.

Kurmura Ladoo

Ingredients

1/2 Cup roasted peanuts
1/2 lb Puffed rice(muri)
1/2 lb Jaggery(gur)
1/2 Cup dry coconut flakes
Few cardamoms(elaichi)

Methods

Take jaggery and water in a cooking pan. Boil till thick syrup is formed. 

To check the consistency, add few drops of the syrup into water. It should solidify immediately. 

Now add roasted peanuts, rice, cardamom powder and dry coconut flakes. Stir the ingredients. 

Allow the mixture to cool for few minutes. 

Smear your palms with little ghee. Roll out balls from the mixture.

The main ritual during Lohri festival include chanting prayers in front of the fire for abundant crops and taking parikramas (three rounds of the pious fire) while throwing peanuts and sweets in the sacred fire. After this ritual ‘prasad’ is distributed that includes mainly six things- sweets like gur, gazak and revdi, peanuts, popcorn and puffed rice.

The first Lohri of a bride or a newborn baby is considered extremely important in India, which calls for a great feast. Lohri celebrations are never complete without music and dance, and feasting is invariably rounded off with a vigorous bit of shake-a-leg. The traditional dinner on Lohri includes appetizing traditional Punjabi food like 'makki ki roti' and 'baajre ki roti' with 'sarson ka saag'.

Lohri History

There is a very old history behind celebrating the Lohri festival. It marks the occurrence of New Year and start of spring season as well as the end of winter season. People believed that the night of Lohri becomes the longest night of the year from then every day starts getting big and nights gets shorter gradually. It is celebrated in the praise of Dulha Batti who was a Muslim robber in the time of King Akbar. He was used to of stealing wealth from rich people’s home and distributing them to the poor people. He was like hero of the poor people and helpless people as he saved lives of various girls who taken away from their home forcibly by strangers. He helped helpless girls in their marriages by paying dowries. So, people started celebrating the Lohri festival praising the Dulha Bhatti for his lots of helps and great works for poor people.

Occurrence of Lohri indicates the movement of sun from South towards North, and enters to Tropic of Capricorn from Tropic of Cancer. Lohri festival is dedicated to the God Sun and Fire. It is one of the happiest occasions for every Punjabi. Sun and Fire indicates the largest source of energy as well as spiritual strength to which people worship to get blessings. People offer some food-offerings to their deity such as peanuts, sweets, popcorn, til-chirva, revaries, gajak, etc. It is celebrated by the people of both religions Sikhs and Hindus.

Lohri or Maghi Day Festival Celebration in Different State of India

In North India, apart from Makar Sankranti known as Lohri and Maghi Day.It is a very exciting festival that is celebrated with utmost cheerfulness and grandeur. It basically marks the end of the cold winters that are colorless and depressing and welcomes the season of fruitfulness, spring and the New Year. Lohri is also celebrated.It falls on 13th January every year.Most popular in the agricultural belt of India namely, the Punjab, it has spread its wings to neighboring regions such as Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Delhi.Primarily a festival of Punjab, it is a harvest festival.Lohri in Punjab is celebrated by with great fervor and joy heralding the arrival of harvest season.

In the morning of  Lohri day, children go from door to door singing and demanding the Lohri loot in the from of money and eatables like til (seasame) seeds,peanuts, jaggery, or sweets like gajak, rewri, etc.They sing in praise of Dulha Bhatti, a Punjabi avtar of Robin Hood who robbed the rich to help the poor, and once helped a miserable village girl by getting her married off as if she was his own sister.The festival is long since associated with the legend of "Dulla Bhatti" a legend about a man who lived in Punjab during the time of King Akbar. He helped the poor people and saved girls from being sold as slaves and arranged their marriages. Most of the traditional songs for Lohri mention him as gratitude for what he did.

Another ritual associated with the festival sees young lads and girls going from home to home and asking for Lohri, which is some form of donation either in cash or sweets. There is a traditional dinner with Makki ki Roti  and Sarson ka Saag . Then the Prasad is distributed which comprises of six things: Til  , Gazak means dry sweet dish, Gur means jaggery, Moongphali means peanut , Phuliya and popcorn.  

The main attraction of Lohri is the huge bonfire which is lit and people gather and sing and dance around it. A number of rituals are performed by people like throwing of sesame seeds, Gur or jaggery, sugarcane sticks, Rewaris, popcorns and several other items into the fire as they dance around it.People dance to the beats of the drum or Dhol and the dance is Bhangra. It is considered to be the most exuberant and exciting dancing style and people wear the most vibrant colours to mark the occasion.

Another feature of the Festival of Lohri in the state of Kashmir is the performance of the special Chajja dance.
