Friday fast is done for Lord Shukra (Venus), Goddess Santoshi. Goddess Vaibhav Lakshmi is also worshiped on this day. All these three fasts are observed in different ways.

Santoshi Maa Vratkatha

Once there was an old lady. She had only one son. After the marriage of her son, she used to make her daughter-in-law do all the house work. But, she never gave her proper food. Boy used to see all these things, but could never say anything to his mother. His wife was busy the whole day in work. She used to make cow dung cakes, prepare chapattis, clean the utensils, wash clothes. Doing all these works her day used to get over.

After lot of thinking and planning, the boy said to his mother “Mother, I am going abroad.” Mother liked the thing and gave him permission to go. After this, he went to his wife and said “I am going abroad. Give me a token of yours.” Wife said “I don’t have anything as a sign to give you.” Saying this, she fell in the feet of her husband and started crying. Because of this, a mark of hand mixed in cow dung was made on the shoes of man.

Oppression of the old lady increased after the going of son. Once, her daughter-in-law became very upset and went to the temple. There she saw many women worshiping. She enquired about the fast from those ladies. They said, they were observing the fast of Goddess Santoshi. They also said, by this fast all sorts of sufferings are vanished.

Women told her that, on Friday after completing the routine work, Puja of Santoshi Mata should be done with full faith by taking pure water in a pot with gram and jaggery. Don’t eat any thing with a sour taste nor gift to anyone. Have meal only once.

Hearing the procedure of fast, she started observing it with full patience on every Friday. By the grace of Goddess, a letter came from her husband. After some day, he had sent money as well. She became happy and again observed the fast. She went to the temple and told all the ladies that she received the letter and money from her husband by the blessings of Goddess Santoshi. She said “O mother! When my husband will return back, I will do the Udyapan (Conclusion) of the fast.

Once Goddess Santoshi came in the dream of her husband and asked the reason of his not going back home. Then he replied that all items of Seth(moneylender) were not sold. And, money had also not come up till now. Next day he told everything of the dream to Seth and asked permission to go home. But, the Seth refused. By the grace of Goddess, many buyers came and purchased gold, silver and many other things. The indebted also returned money. Now the moneylender allowed him to go back home.

After going home, he gave lot of money to his mother and wife. Then, wife said to do the Udyapan of the Vrat of Goddess Santoshi. She invited everyone and did all the preparations for Udyapan. A lady living nearby started feeling jealous seeing her happiness. The lady taught her children to ask for sour food item while having meal.

At the time of Udyapan, children started insisting to have sour stuff. Daughter-in-law gave the children some money to make them quiet. Children went to shop and started eating tamarind, brought from that money. Goddess got angry and showed wrath on her. Servants of king caught her husband and stated taking him. Then some one told her, children ate Imli of the money, during Udyapan. She again took the resolution of doing the Udyapan of Vrat.

After taking the resolution when see was coming out of the temple, she saw her husband approaching to her. Husband said that the king is asking for the tax of the money earned. Next Friday, she again did the Udyapan of fast in a systematic manner. Goddess Santoshi was pleased. After nine month, the lady gave birth to a beautiful son. Now the mother, husband and wife, all started living happily by the grace of Goddess Santoshi.

A small story lies behind the celebration of Hartalika Teek vrat. Legends explain that after the death of Sati Devi, Lord Shiva started ignoring the entire world, including Goddess Parvati without noticing her devoted love. In order to get her husband’s attention, Parvati underwent severe penance for several years surviving only on grass and fruits. Eventually, Lord Shiva got pleased by the love and affection of Parvati and finally accepted her. Hence, this festival is commemorated by all women, whether married or single. They dress up in new green clothes and new jewelry. In certain regions, married women visit their premarital homes and observe the fast along with their parents and other family members. They put on green bangles and a golden bindi.

Stories of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva are read out and listened as they are considered auspicious on this festival. In the evenings, special prayers are arranged for worshipping the deities. Thereafter, traditional songs and dances are performed which are actively participated by relatives and friends. Fresh fruits and vegetables are brought specially for this day and offered to Parvati. Gauri Vrat Story

Long time ago, a merchant named Dharampal lived in a city. He had a very beautiful wife and
sufficient wealth. But, they were not at all happy as they had no children. However, by the grace of God they obtained a son who was unfortunately short lived (Alpayu) as he was cursed of death by snake bite at the age of sixteen. But fortunately, he was married before he achieved that age (sixteen) with a girl whose mother observed the Mangala Gauri Vrat.

As a result, she was blessed with a daughter who would never face widowhood. So, Dharampal’s son achieved a life span of hundred years. Thus, all the newly married women should perform this pujan and observe this vrat for long, consistent and happy conjugal life. Those who cannot observe fast should at least perform the pooja.

After hearing the above sacred tale, the married women offer 16 laddus to their mother-in-law and sister-in-laws. Thereafter, they offer the same Prasada to a Brahmin. After completing this ritual, devotees perform Nirajan (aarti) of the 16 wick lamps before the Goddess. The next day i.e. on Wednesday, the idol of Devi Mangala Gauri is immersed in a pond or lake. This poojan and vrat is performed for five consecutive years for happiness of the family.

The king invited a Brahmin and his wife for the ceremony of Shitala Saptami vrat. The king’s daughter Shubhakari mounted a chariot and with her female friends set out for the puja ceremony of Shitaladevi. The puja was to take place by some lake.
Unfortunately, they took a wrong turn and got lost. Leaving the chariot, they started walking on foot, and dispersed in different directions. Princess Shubhakari was overcome by fatigue and sat under a tree. She saw an elderly woman approaching her and asked her for directions.
“O girl, follow me and I will lead you to a lake”  said the old woman and took them to a lake. The princess bathed in the lake and with devotion and faith, placed the image of Shitaladevi on a makeshift platform of stone. The old lady was herself Shitaladevi. She was well pleased. Placing her hand on the head of Princess Shubhakari she asked her to state her wish.
The princess said: “Mother, I shall surely ask when the need arises”.
Then the old lady (Shitaladevi) escorted the princess and her female friends to the lake where they were to meet the Brahmin and his wife. The Brahmin’s wife was heard crying aloud. Princess Subhakari went to her and saw that her husband was lying dead, apparently bitten by a snake.
Princess Shubhakari again bathed in the lake and concentrated her mind upon Shitaladevi and stated her wish: “Mother, please bring back to life this Brahmin”.
Bhagavati Shitaladevi was pleased and restored life to the Brahmin. Everybody was full of joy. They all performed Shitaladevi’s puja and returned home.
People of Hastinapur were filled with awe on hearing that the dead Brahmin was brought back to life. The citizens together with the parents of the princess made a murti of Shitaladevi and celebrated this day in the manner of a festival. After staying for a few more days, Princess Shubhakari went with Prince Gunvaan to her in-laws. There also, being impressed by Shitalamata, they developed faith and devotion. It is said that the children of those who are Shitala vratdhai (who observe this vrat) do not suffer from smallpox and that their wishes get fulfilled.
