Shravan Sakariyo Somvar(Monday) Vrat in Gujarati

Mondays, or Somvar, in the month of Shravan (July – August) is considered highly auspicious for praying to Lord Shiva. It is believed that the worship of Shiva during Shrawan month is 108 times more powerful than worshipping during normal days. Millions of devout Hindus observe the Shravan Somwar Vrat – fasting and performing Pujas on Mondays in Sawan Month.

How to Observed  Shravan Somvar(Monday) Vrat

 

After the morning bath and other purification rituals.
Lord Ganesha is first prayed to.
Next, Lord Shiva is prayed to by chanting Om Namah Shivaya.
The offerings that are made are Bilva leaves, white flowers, water, honey and milk.
If you have Shivling at home you can do abhishek with water, honey or milk.
Fasting on the day is from sunrise to sunset.
You can chant Maha Mritunjaya Mantra or Om Namah Shivaya on the day.
Those who observe fast on Mondays in some regions wear only white clothes.
Those observing partial fast eat fruits.
Some devotees read the Shiva Purana on the day.
Those people who live along the banks of Ganga use water from Ganga to perform abhishek on the Shivling.
The fast is broken in the evening after praying to Lord Shiva. Some devotees visit a Shiva Shrine during the period. Some devotees opt for a 24-hour fast and they break the fast on the next day morning.

Mangala Gauri Vrat Date in Shravan Month 2017

On every Tuesday in the month of Shravan Goddess Mangala Gauri is worshipped, and the religious observance is known as Mangala Gauri Vrat. The vrat is celebrated by married women, especially newly married, for the good fortune of their husbands and children, and above all for a long and happy conjugal life.

On Tuesday morning, the idol or picture of the Devi Mangala Gauri is placed on a small wooden platform wrapped in a red cloth. A lamp consisting of 16 thick cotton wicks made of wheat flour (atta) is lit with ghee and the devotees meditate by reciting the following mantra:-

"Kungkumaaguru liptaangaa
Sarva avaran bhooshitam.
Neelakanthapryaam Gaureem
Vandeham Mangalaahavayaam"

Once through with the meditation (Dhyan), Devi Mangala Gauri is worshipped by performing a pooja with Shodoroshopochar rituals.

Offer Lord Shiva Bhibhuti and place some on your forehead.

Make offerings of Bel leaves, Panchamrut (Milk, Yoghurt, Ghee – clarified butter, Honey and Jaggery) on Shiva Ling.

Significance of Shravan Weekdays

Important of Pithori Amavashya

The importance of Shravani Amavasi vrata was narrated by Goddess Paravathi. She told this to wife of Lord Indra. This legend explains that by performing this vrata one can get healthy and brave sons.Pithori Amavasya is observed by married women. “Pith” means flour from which life and name comes into existence. On this day, women who have children worship 64 Goddess and pray for long life of their children. The idols of 64 Goddess are made of Pith, the flour. In some regions, Goddes Durga is worshipped as Yogini. Each Pith represents one Yogini. So there are 64 yoginis.

Another important feature is worship of Saptamatrikas. Saptamatrikas are the 7 divine mothers who are seen associated with Shiva and Shakti. Names of 7 devis are: Brahmani, Vaishnavi, Maheshwari, Kaumari, Varahi, Indrani and Chamundi. There are several legends associated with each of them, which are found in the Kurma Purana, Varaha Purana and the Mahabharata. When Yogeshwari, a divine Shakti created by Lord Shiva, is mentioned then the count is eight.

On the day of pithori amavasya 64 Yoginis and Saptamatrikas are worshipped. Married women form a gathering and take part in celebrations. They prepare special recipes and offer to the Goddess. They exchange gifts with each other. They bless their children for their future.

Shravani Amavashya Celebration

Shravani amavasya is observed with great enthusiasm in Northern states of India. Marathi calendar marks the day of pithori amavasi as Pola. Pola is celebrated on Amavasya in the Sravana month. In Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh this Amavasya is observed as Polala Amavasya. It is said that if one performs Pinda daan, offering to dead ancestors, it fetches great merits.

About Shravan Month

Shravan is the fifth month of Hindu calendar begining from Chaitra. This month is considered highly auspicious for praying to Lord Shiva. It is believed that worshiping Lord Shiva during Sawan is considered more powerful than worshiping during normal days. Many Hindus observe fasts and perform Pujas during the month, especially on Monday.

The fasts done on Monday are known as Shravan Somwar Vrat. It is believed that by observing Sravan Somvar Vrat all desires gets fulfilled. It is believed that if unmarried women keep fast on Mondays of the month they would get a good husband. Apart from Monday’s women keep fasts on Tuesdays and Fridays of the month too.

 On Tuesdays newly married brides keep the Mangala Gauri Vrata to get rid of bad omens and married women keep Varalaksmi Vrata on Friday (Shravan Shukravar Vrata). Each day in the month of Shravan has a special significance and other deities are worshiped too. Mondays are dedicated to Shiva, Tuesdays to Gauri, Wednesdays to Vithala, Thursdays to Mercury and Jupiter, Fridays to Lakshmi and Tulsi, Saturdays to Shani and Sundays to Sun. Many do Pujas of Lord Vishnu on Saturday. 

Those who have complications in their birth chart due to the planet Saturn observe fast on this day of Sampat Shanivar .Praying to Goddess Lakshmi is also considered auspicious in this month. Some other auspicious occasions in the month of Shravan are Hariyali Amavasi, Hariyali Teej, Nag Panchami, Tulsi Das Jayanti,Putradaikadashi, Shravani Purnima, Rishi Panchami, and Krishna Janmashtami Raksha Bandan.

The legend says that when the churning of oceans - Samudra Manthan - took place in the month of Shravan, fourteen different types of rubies came out. Thirteen of these were distributed amongst the demons, except Halahal (poison). Lord Shiva drank the Halahal and stored it in his throat. Hence the name Neelkantha (meaning blue throat) is attributed to Shiva.

To reduce the strong effect of poison, Lord Shiva wore the crescent moon on his head. All the Gods, thereafter started offering the Ganges water to Lord Shiva to make lessen the effect of poison.

Since, this happened in the month of Shravana, since then the Shiva devotees offer the Ganges water in this month.  It is considered highly auspicious to wear a rudraksha in Shravan month. As, Mondays or Somvars of Shravan month are specially observed with austerity. All Mondays are devoted to the worship of Shiva as this day is sacred to Lord Shiva. No other Mondays of other months are so greatly honoured.The belief is that in Shravan month, offering milk to Lord Shiva earns a lot of punya.
