Dhanteras precedes Diwali and therefore people prepare for the grand celebrations of Diwali on this day. The houses and business locations are cleaned and decorated with festoons and lights. Most Diwali purchases happen on this day leading to a hectic commercial activity in the markets.

➤On Dhanteras, the households are cleaned and people decorate their houses. From the entrance of the house, steps of Lakshmi are drawn on the floor leading to the puja room. Rangolis adorn the house fronts.

➤Some people fast for the whole day till the evening on Dhanteras. In the evening, fasting is concluded after Dhanteras puja and lighting Yamdeep. The main dishes for the day are puris and sweets.

➤On Dhanteras some people worship seven grains displaying them in front of Mother Lakshmi.

➤In the evening, Lakshmi puja and Dhanvanri puja happen during the pradosh kal or the two hours following sunset.

Dhanteras Pooja Vidhi(Process)

You may perform Ganesha and Lakshmi Pooja during Pradosh Kaal. Before the Pooja, you can make rangolis to welcome Goddess Lakshmi. You can also make small footprints on the floor to symbolise the Goddess’ arrival. And besides these, you can also buy news utensils made of metal/steel and gold jewellery.

Dhanteras(Dhanvantari Triodasi) Festival History, Legends and Story

Dhanteras is a first day festival of the great and famous Hindu festival, Diwali which is the five-days long festival and celebrated in Varanasi and traditionally all over the India. Dhanteras festival is celebrated on triodasi of the Krishna Paksha (the dark fortnight).Here is information about  Dhanteras festival History , Legends and story.

There is an interesting story behind celebrating the Dhanteras festival. It is considered that, once upon a time, King Hima’s sixteen year old son was destined to pass away just by the snake-bite on the fourth day of his marriage. His wife was very clever and she did not allow her husband to sleep on 4th day of the marriage. She arranges some gold ornaments as well as a lot of silver coins and made a large heap at the doorway of her husband. She also made light with the help of numerous lamps all around the place of his husband.

When the God of death, (Yama), came to his husband in the appearance of a snake, his eyes got sightless by the dazzling light of the lamps, silver coins and gold ornaments. So the lord Yama could not get entered into his chamber. Then he tried to ascend on top of the heap and started to listen the harmonious songs of his wife. Early in the morning, he had to gone away without taking her husband. Therefore the very young and newly married wife had saved her husband life from the death. That’s why, the Dhanteras is also known as the Yamadeepdaan. Diyas or candles are kept blazing during the whole night in respect to the God Yama.

Another myth is, a long ago Gods and demons stirred the ocean to get Amrita or nectar, after many days the Lord Vishnu had came out on the day of Dhanteras having a jar of the elixir.

Dhanteras Story

According to ancient legends, the celebration of Dhanteras is attributed to the story of the sixteen year old son of king Hima. Predictions were made that he would die of a snake bite on the fourth day of his marriage.

 

Four days hence his marriage, his newly wedded wife, being aware of this prediction laid out all her ornaments along with coins made of precious metals of gold and silver in a heap at the entrance of her husband's sleeping chamber and furbished the whole place with lamps.

Then, all night long she narrated stories and sang songs to keep her husband from falling asleep. It is believed, that when Yama, the God of death, arrived under the guise of a snake, he found himself unable to enter the prince's chamber as he was dazzled and blinded by the light of the lamps and jewellery, and so he climbed the heap of ornaments and coins and listened to the melodious songs of the wife.

In the morning, he quietly went away sparing the life of the prince. In this manner, the young wife saved her husband from the clasp of death itself. Hence, this day also came to be known as 'Yamadeepdaan'.

Another popular legend also associates itself with this festival. It believes in the appearance of Dhanvantari (physician of the Gods and an incarnation of Vishnu), with a jar of elixir on the day of Dhanteras during the cosmic battle fought between the gods and demons, who had churned the ocean for Amrita or nectar.

How to Celebrate Dhanteras(Laxmi Pooja)

Dhanteras is one of the most important Hindu religious festivals that are celebrated around this time of the year. Also known as Dhanatrayodashi, the festival is observed all over India. It also marks the beginning of Tihar festival in Nepal. ‘Dhan’ means wealth and ‘teras’ means the thirteenth day of the moon cycle. The festival also signifies the first day of the five-day Diwali celebrations and falls on the thirteenth lunar day of Karthik Krishna Paksha, of the Hindu month of Kartik (October-November).

On Dhanteras, Lakshmi - the Goddess of wealth - is worshiped to provide prosperity and well being. It is also the day for celebrating wealth, as the word 'Dhan' literally means wealth and 'Tera' comes from the date 13th.

In the evening, the lamp is lit and Dhan-Lakshmi is welcomed into the house. Alpana or Rangoli designs are drawn on pathways including the goddess' footprints to mark the arrival of Lakshmi. Aartis or devotional hymns are sung eulogizing Goddess Lakshmi and sweets and fruits are offered to her.

Hindus also worship Lord Kuber as the treasurer of wealth and bestower of riches, along with Goddess Lakshmi on Dhanteras. This custom of worshiping Lakshmi and Kuber together is in prospect of doubling the benefits of such prayers.

People flock to the jewelers and buy gold or silver jewelry or utensils to venerate the occasion of Dhanteras.

Many wear new clothes and wear jewelry as they light the first lamp of Diwali while some engage in a game of gambling.

Dhanteras marks the first day of five-days-long Diwali Festival.Dhanteras Festival, also known as Dhantrayodashi or Dhanwantari Triodasi, falls on the auspicious thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Kartik (October/November). In the word Dhanteras, "Dhan" stands for wealth. Dhanteras being a festival of wealth, also has a significance of purchases of new and expensive possessions.Many Indians set up their businesses, launch new projects, hold housewarming, and set wedding dates on this day.Dhanteras is regarded as an auspicious occasion to buy some gold or silver articles.Many people shop for new utensils for their household.

Diwali is preceded by the festival like Dhanteras, and Choti Diwali, and followed by Govardhan Pooja and Bhai Dooj.'Dhanteras' or'Dhantrayodashi' , takes place two days before Diwali , in honour of Dhanavantari, the physician of the gods and an incarnation of Vishnu.As such this day of five-day Diwali festival has a great importance for the rich mercantile community of India.The legend of Samudramanthan has the importance of these celebrations.

On this day, houses and business premises are renovated and decorated.Entrances of the houses are decorated with lovely traditional motifs of Rangoli designs to welcome the Goddess wealth and prosperity.To indicate her long-awaited arrival, small footprints are drawn with rice flour and vermilion powder all over the houses.Lamps are kept burning all through the nights.'Lakshmi-Pooja' is performed in the evening when tiny diyas of clay are lighted to drive away the shadows of evil spirits.'Bhajans'-devotional songs-in praise of Goddess Laxmi are sung and 'Naivedya' of traditional sweets is offered to the Goddess.

Dhanteras Story

 

According to this story, when the gods and demons churned the ocean for Amrut or nectar, Dhanavantri, the physician of the gods and an incarnation of Vishnu emerged carrying a jar of the elixir.Another interesting story about this day is of the sixteen year old son of King Hima.As per his horoscope he was doomed to die by a snake-bite on the fourth day of his marriage.On that particular fourth day of his marriage his young wife did not allow him to sleep.She laid all the ornaments and lots of Gold and silver coins in a big heap at the entrance of her husband's boudoir and lighted innumerable lamps all over the place.And she went on telling stories and singing songs.When Yam, the god of Death arrived of those brilliant lights and he could not enter the Prince's chamber.So hr climbed on top of the heap of the ornaments and coins and sat there whole night listening to the melodious songs.In the morning he quietly went away.Thus the young wife saved her husband from the clutches of death.Since then this day of Dhanteras came to be known as the day of 'Yamadeepdaan'and lamps are kept burning throughout the night in reverential adoration to Yam, the god of death.
