The festival is celebrated on the ninth day of Shukla Paksha in the Ashada month. An important fact related to Bhadli Navmi is that the day is usually considered to be the last day in the year for solemnizing marriages in the Hindu community. The Navchandi Fair was started in 1672 AD for cattle traders. According to a myth, Ravan’s wife Mandodari was born in a demon’s house in Meerut. She built a temple in honor of Goddess Chandi. Since then this religious festival is celebrated in the month of February or March. It takes place annually in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh in India for cattle traders. 

The ten great learnings are related with Sati, Shiva and Parvati, all synonymous of the same Shakti (power). She is also known as Navdurga, Chamunda, Vishnupriya etc and is worshiped. The origin of this ten great knowledge is as follows. 

 

Daksha Prajapati, the father of Sati, once performed a religious sacrifice (Yagya) in which he invited all the deities and sages, except his own Son-in-law lord Shiva, because of his jealousy towards him.Sati wanted to be present at that occasion but Lord Shiva refused to give permission, thinking it was improper for her to go without the invitation. But she was unmoved: She said "I will certainly got to the Yagya performed by Daksha Prajapati, I would either get the fortune of that religious sacrifice for my dearest, deity of the deities, husband or else I would destroy that religious sacrifice itself."Sati's eyes became red. She looked at Lord Shiva violently, her lips began to flutter, and her complexion became dark. The fire of her anger made her appearance look frightened and violent. 

Such an appearance of Sati was frightening even for Lord Shiva. Her appearance, which had the blaze and radiance of crores of mid-noon-suns, made her so fearful that he just ran away. 

To stop Lord Shiva from running away in all the possible ten directions, Sati manifested herself in to ten different forms. These ten Shaktis (powers) of Sati are known as the ten great knowledge's.

3) CHHINNAMASTA
4) SHODASHI
5) BHUVANESHWARI
6) TRIPURA - BHAIRAVI
7) DHUMAVATI
8) BAGLAMUKHI
9) MATANGI
10) KAMALA

Among all the ten great learnings, Kali is the main. All the other nine are nothing but the violent and sombre appearances of Kali. These ten appearances of Mahakali are called the ten great learnings. These are considered as the powers of Lord Shiva, the Lord of all the knowledges. Though these ten great learnings are worshipped in many other forms and appearance, but these ten forms mentioned above are the main.
The method of worship of all these ten forms is different. KALI, TARA, CHHINNAMASTA, BAGALAMUKHI AND DHOOMAVATI are apparently violent but in reality they are most merciful, where as BHUVANESHWARI, SHODASHI, TRIPUR, BHAIRAVI, MATANGI and KAMALA are the sombre appearances. These ten great learnings are the most valuable wealth of the Sadhakas (accomplishers) which give infinite accomplishments and also are capable of introducing the infinity to them.

This fair takes place immediately after the traditional festival of Shigi Hunnive. Thus is attracts a lot of crowd.The fair holds a folk and religious importance. The main feature of the fair is the religious procession followed by drummers.The procession is taken out in the day of the festival and people follow the procession in huge crowds. The deity is being carried in a palanquin. 60 parties of drummers assemble at the village from different parts of the country to follow the procession during the festival.Sacrifice if animal is a very common ritual of the festival. The animals for sacrifice are available from the priests who sell them. The amounts raised by selling the animals are accredited to the temple funds.

Devotees who come to Sri Vithappa Fair believe that if the milk which they bring for offering turns into curd before offering then it is considered as good omen.

During Sri Vithappa Fair there is another ritual of collecting grains from a container kept in the temple by any person in Chunchanoor village and if these grains are sowed in the field good crops are expected to yield.

History of Sri Vithappa Fair

The celebration goes on as per the belief of the village people who honor the Vithappa deity. In a Palanquin the deity is brought in a procession accompanied by around 60 parties who come as drummers. They come from various parts of the world and from the different sections of the society who gather in a huge number. Thousands of people from the villages join the celebration of the fair. Sheep is offered by the devotees to the Vithappa deity. The Pujari sell those sheep later on and the revenue generated from the selling is collected for the purpose of the temple. The funds are created in the name of the temple. The fair of Kaila Devi is celebrated at village Kaila in the month of Chaitra (March-April) as per the Hindu calendar. This particular fair takes place in the honor of deity Kaila Devi, believed to be a form Chamunda, the goddess of death and Mahalakshmi, the goddess of wealth. Different types of animals are sacrificed outside the temple to persuade the goddess Kaila Devi. Bhavnath Fairis celebrated with great fanfare and many devotees do a ‘parikrama’ around the Girnar Mountains covering a total distance of 7 km during Maha Shivratri Festival.Thousands of pilgrims from all over converge here. Prior to the start of the Mahapuja, a huge procession led by “Naga Bavas” (ascetics with no clothes on) seated on decorated elephants and holding flags, gets under way. Bhavai, folk songs and folk dances attract large audiences during the event.

On the very day, Bhavnath Mahadev temple is decorated and thousands of devotees across the country come to visit the fair and the festival.Devotees believe that Shiva himself visits the shrine on this occasion. Girnar is said to be the abode of the nine immortal nathas, and eighty-four siddhas, all of whom also visit the temple in their invisible spirit forms during Mahashivaratri. Offerings are made to the deities, and the festive energy courses through performances of dance, music and traditional bhavai theatre.

Before going to the fair, many pilgrims do a parikrama of the holy hills of Girnar, a journey of about 7 km. Visitors are served free meals by the organizers. Special stalls sell idols, rosaries brought from Ayodhya and Mathura, and delectable sweets.This fair is beautiful but at the same time passionate and intense, so we caution first time visitors to move in groups, not  alone. About Nauchandi Mela

Nauchandi Mela started in 1672 AD as a one-day affair mainly for cattle traders. A multitude of activities religious rituals, commercial, artistic and rustic merriment form part of the fair.The fair figured during the First War of Indian Independence in 1857 when one of the prominent figures of the revolt, Nana Saheb, came here to motivate the locals to raise arms against the British. Except in 1858, a year after the revolt against the East India Company, the fair has been held here regularly. 

Nauchandi Mela is a rare symbol of communal harmony with visitors paying obeisance to both the Hindu and Muslim shrines - the Nauchandi Temple and the Dargah of Bala Mian - irrespective of the religion they belong to.The Mela is a delight for the food connoisseur as well. Stalls selling a wide variety of food items from across India are present.

History of  Nauchandi Mela

The fair has its own history and numerous legends and stories are woven around it. It started in AD 1672 as a one-day affair mainly for cattle traders but has since undergone many changes. Cattle trading has been replaced by a multitude of activities-religious rituals, commercial activity, artistic creativity and rustic merriment. 

The mela also figured during the First War of Indian Independence in 1857 when one of the prominent figures of the revolt, Nana Saheb, came here to motivate the locals to raise arms against the British. When the British regained control, they put up posters of Nana Saheb and his warriors at the Nauchandi mela to gain favor of the local populace.According to another story, the East India Company used to put up the fair as a revenue collection center around 1800. And in 1884, F.N.Wright, the then collector of Meerut district started a horse exhibition where thoroughbred stallions were sold. Of course, other activities commensurate with the mela used to be organized to attract prospective buyers. The period of the mela stretches for over a month now. Except in 1858, a year after the revolt against the East India Company rule started from Meerut, the fair has been held here regularly.

 Legend and Rituas of Nauchandi Mela

According to one belief, Mandodari, Ravan’s (demon king of Lanka in the epic Ramayana) wife, was born in a devil’s house in Meerut. She was, however, a great devotee of goddess Chandi and she had a temple erected in her honour. A religious festival was held to celebrate this occasion. Since then the fair has been held every year. 

As the legend of the dargah goes, Syed Salar Masood Ghazi was a commander in the army of Mahmood of Ghazni who invaded India in AD 1017 and proved his mettle in the fight against the local king. During the course of a battle, he lost one of his fingers. Syed Salar subsequently denounced violence, became an ascetic, and took the name Bala Mian. The present dargah was built in his memory in AD 1194 by Qutub-ud-din Aibak, at the spot where his cut finger had fallen during the battle.

The cultural aspect of the Nauchandi Mela is also as important. Every evening some cultural program  or the other is held, which goes on till the early hours of the morning. The mela has had the honor of playing host to artistes like the internationally renowned Pandit Ravi Shankar. Besides, the mela committee has started a few new events like beauty contests, honoring the aged, organizing women's conferences, fireworks and music competitions. Plans are also afoot to set up an art gallery and museum to preserve the historic, cultural and artistic aspects of the mela.

While nautankis (melodramas performed by professional theatre companies) are still staged, the real crowd puller are the musical program with modern orchestra.

By Air : Meerut is situated very close to New Delhi, the seat of Indian Government. Delhi Airport is 60 odd Kilometers from Meerut. 8th November Day 1 

The day will begin with the Pooja and Flag Hoisting ceremony followed by the Mandana competitions and art displays by renowned artist. The main attraction for the day will be the Football Match between the foreigners and locals. Apart from various art exhibitions, there will be a live music concert at night which will leave you spellbound. 

9th November  Day 2 

The beginning of the second day will see a traditional game of Langri Taang with the foreigners. The famous Camel Decoration Contest will be held on this day followed by the Camel Dance contest. At night there will be a singing competition for the locals namely, Voice of Pushkar. The night event will be a Folk entertainment by the local artists. 

10th November Day 3 

The third day will see humongous crowds for Horse Dance Contest and Kite Flying Demonstration. Rural games like tug-of-war and Volleyball will also be organised. Live concert at night will give you a peaceful feeling after the eventful day. 

11th November Day 4 

Spiritual Walk- early morning walk from the Gurudwara to the ground will leave you energised for the day. This is the day when cattles are cross-bred in the exhibition. A special dance performance at the end of the day will let you know about different dance forms of India. 

12th November Day 5 

If you are a hard core cricket fan, Lagaan Style Cricket Match will keep you glued to your seats. Sonepur is a town in the Indian state of Bihar, situated on the banks of the River Gandak in Saran district in the Indian state of Bihar.It hosts one of the world's largest animal fairs. It is on the confluence of four rivers.The Sonepur Cattle Fair or Sonepur is held on Kartik Poornima (the full moon day) in the month of November in Sonepur, Bihar, on the confluence of river Ganga and Gandak. It is also known as Harihar Kshetra fair and it attracts visitors from all over Asia. Elephants, horses, dogs, donkeys, ponies, rabbits and goats are sold from the fair.The area that attracts all, however, is the one where elephants are lined up for sale. The Sonepur Fair is the only one where such a large number of elephants are sold. Numerous stalls are also set up at the grounds of the Sonepur Cattle Fair. You will find a wide variety of goods in these stalls, ranging from garments, to weapons and furniture, toys, utensils and agricultural implements, jewelry and handicrafts. Major attraction is the sight of numerous elephants, beautifully decorated for the purpose of sale.

History of Sonepur Fair

 

Originally, the venue of the fair was Hajipur and people went to sonpur to worship the god Vishnu in Harihar Nath temple in sonpur. However, under the rule of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, the venue of the fair got shifted to Sonepur. The temple of Harihar Nath is believed to have been originally built by Lord Rama, on his way to the court of King Janak to win the hand of Mata Sita. It is further said that Raja Man Singh later got the temple repaired. The Harihar Nath temple, as it stands today, was built by Raja Ram Narain, an influential person during the late Mughal period.

The Sonepur mela has a profound historic grandeur. According to the travelogue of a British administrative officer, W W Hynter, in 1919, the Sonepur mela used to be held in over 43 villages in the past. But now a days the Sonepur mela is held here on a sprawling 200 acres of land.

Since Sonepur is situated at the convergence of the sacred rivers Ganges and Gandak, the Hindus regard it as a holy site. One of the purposes of the people visiting the Sonepur Cattle Fair, apart from the fair, is to take a holy dip at the convergence and pay respects at the Hariharnath Temple. There are lot of holy temple like Naulakkha Mandir, kali mandir, Radha-krishna mandir, Sadhu Gachhi and many more. It was also famous for Sadhu-Mahatma.

According to sources, the mela venue in the past also used to serve as a prime place for freedom movement. In fact, the fair was for the first time held on the Hajipur side around the 16th century. Later, the mela was shifted to the Sonepur side at the initiative of the then British officials to suppress the freedom movement.

About Pushkar Fair

The Pushkar Fair is annually held at Pushkar town, 11 Km from Ajmer in Rajasthan for 7 Days.This cultural and trade cum religious fair is an attractive and lively spectacle with Rajasthani men and women in their colorful tradition attire, saffron-robed and ash smeared Sadhus(monks) and thousands of bulls. cows,sheeps, goats,horses and camels in richly decorated saddles.The Fair attracts more than one lakh people , from all over Rajasthan as well as tourists from different parts of India and abroad.

The fair is thrown open to the public with a flag hoisting ceremony at the mela ground. In the evening, plenty of people assemble near the Pushkar Lake or Sarovar to see the deepdan (floating lamp) ritual and offer prayers in Brahma Temple.

Trading of cattle, camel races and dazzling displays of bangles, brassware,  clothes, camel saddle and halters make the fair colourful.Neckllaces of glass beads from Naguar , pottery, printed textiles from Jodhpur and Ajmer are all on sale here.Farmers, cattle traders and breeders buy and sell their animals, leather whips , saddles etc.There are facilites for camel rides also.

An Interesting part of the Pushkar fair is the mass trading of camel.Of course, cattle and other livestock are also traded, but camels hold center stage at Pushkar.Camel-traders and villagers from miles away converage here with their humped beats.Over 25,000 camels are traded, making this the worlds's largest camel fair.All the camels are cleaned, washed, adorned, some are interestingly shorn to form patterns, and special stalls are set up selling finery and jewelry for the camels. Camels at the Pushkar fair are decorated with great care. They wear jewelry of silver and beads. There are silver bells and bangles around their ankles that jingle-jangle when they walk. An interesting ritual is the piercing of a camel's nose.

History of Vautha Fair

According to the Hindu mythology, Kartikeya the son of Lord Shiva visited this place on the full moon night of  Kartik (Kartik Purnima). Kartikeya was on a trip covering the entire earth. It was on Kartik Purnima that he stopped at this culmination of rivers and performed some austerities. Also the city of Dholka in the Ahmedabad district is considered to be the‘Virata Nagar’ of  the Mahabharata where the Pandavas spent the last year of their exile in disguise.

Vautha Fair is Large Celebration in Vautha Gujarat on Dev Diwali.Thousands of people and visitors visit Sangam during the month of kartik and especially during the Vautha Fair. The most important religious act performed by numerous devotees coming here is the purifying bath on the Sangam tirtha which is supposed to be reliever of all past sins. During the fair before people start engaging in the trading of the animals is that they take a holy dip in the water of the Sangam Tirtha as it is said that it will wash their sins down.

All people from nearby villages and districts lock their houses and come to attend the fair which lasts for about five days. A number of tents are erected that are used by visitors of the fair to accommodate. Nearly 25,000 people house in about 2000 tents every year and enjoy the grand spectacle of the Vautha fair.

 

Visitors are seen preparing elaborate sweets and food dishes throughout the five days of fair. The fair generally ends with the preparation of Ladoos and the most popular and appreciated dishes are khichu and kachariyu.One can notice people dressed in new clothes and traditional attires coming to the fair with friends and families. The entire place is enveloped in an atmosphere of joy and fun.
