Shani Jayanti is marked as birth anniversary of Lord Shani. Shani Jayanti is also known as Shani Amavasya. Lord Shani is son of Lord Suryadev and rules planet Saturn and weekday Saturday. Shani Jayanti is observed on Amavasya Tithi during Jyaishta month according to North Indian Purnimant calendar. According to South Indian Amavasyant calendar Shani Jayanti falls on Amavasya Tithi during Vaishakha month. It is name of Lunar month which differs and in both type of calendars Shani Jayanti falls on the same day. 

Shani Jayanti Birth Story

As per legends, Saturn is the son of Surya Deva and his wife Chaya. Surya deva was married to Sandhya with whom he had three children, Manu, Yam and Yamuna. Sandhya could not bear the radiance of Sun for long and decided to go, leaving her shadow (chaya) behind in service of Lord Sun. After some time Chaya gave birth to Saturn.

Shani Jayanti Puja

On the occasion of Shani Jayanti, devotees worship Lord Shani and observe fasts with proper rituals. It is believed that donation, charity, puja, path etc made on Shani Jayanti gives relief from all sufferings caused by malefic Saturn. The observer should wake up early in the morning, take bath, greet all the nine planets and establish an idol of Lord Shani made of iron. Bathe the idol with mustard oil, sesame seeds and chant below given shani mantra:

After doing puja as per the rituals donate saturn related articles such as black cloth, black urad, black shoes. sesame, iron, mustard oil etc. along with things used in puja. 
The person observing fast should not eat food and chant shani mantra throughout the day.
Sesame, black pepper, peanut oil, pickle, clove, basil leaf and black salt must be used in the puja. Worshipping Lord Hanuman also pleases Lord Shani.
Significance of Shani Jayanti

Huge crowd of devotees can be seen in major Shani temple during Shani Jayanti. They worship Lord Shani with faith and devotion to get relief from the sufferings caused by malefic Saturn. It is believed that Shani is black which is why he is fond of black colour. He is adorned with black clothes. According to hindu scriptures, Lord Shani was born on the amavasya of Jyeshtha month. Since birth he was black in complexion, had long physique, big eyes and long years. He is known as the lord of justice as he is always ready to help people. He gives results as per the karma of a individual.

Dhanteras is a first day festival of the great and famous Hindu festival, Diwali which is the five-days long festival and celebrated in Varanasi and traditionally all over the India. There is an interesting story behind celebrating the Dhanteras festival. It is considered that, once upon a time, King Hima’s sixteen year old son was destined to pass away just by the snake-bite on the fourth day of his marriage. His wife was very clever and she did not allow her husband to sleep on 4th day of the marriage. She arranges some gold ornaments as well as a lot of silver coins and made a large heap at the doorway of her husband. She also made light with the help of numerous lamps all around the place of his husband.

When the God of death, (Yama), came to his husband in the appearance of a snake, his eyes got sightless by the dazzling light of the lamps, silver coins and gold ornaments. So the lord Yama could not get entered into his chamber. Then he tried to ascend on top of the heap and started to listen the harmonious songs of his wife. Early in the morning, he had to gone away without taking her husband. Therefore the very young and newly married wife had saved her husband life from the death. That’s why, the Dhanteras is also known as the Yamadeepdaan. Diyas or candles are kept blazing during the whole night in respect to the God Yama.

Another myth is, a long ago Gods and demons stirred the ocean to get Amrita or nectar, after many days the Lord Vishnu had came out on the day of Dhanteras having a jar of the elixir.

Dhanteras Story

According to ancient legends, the celebration of Dhanteras is attributed to the story of the sixteen year old son of king Hima. Predictions were made that he would die of a snake bite on the fourth day of his marriage.

 

Four days hence his marriage, his newly wedded wife, being aware of this prediction laid out all her ornaments along with coins made of precious metals of gold and silver in a heap at the entrance of her husband's sleeping chamber and furbished the whole place with lamps.

Then, all night long she narrated stories and sang songs to keep her husband from falling asleep. It is believed, that when Yama, the God of death, arrived under the guise of a snake, he found himself unable to enter the prince's chamber as he was dazzled and blinded by the light of the lamps and jewellery, and so he climbed the heap of ornaments and coins and listened to the melodious songs of the wife.

In the morning, he quietly went away sparing the life of the prince. In this manner, the young wife saved her husband from the clasp of death itself. Hence, this day also came to be known as 'Yamadeepdaan'.

Another popular legend also associates itself with this festival. It believes in the appearance of Dhanvantari (physician of the Gods and an incarnation of Vishnu), with a jar of elixir on the day of Dhanteras during the cosmic battle fought between the gods and demons, who had churned the ocean for Amrita or nectar.

Sharad Purnima Pooja Fast

On Sharad Purnima day, fast is observed and family God is worshipped. At night, Indra on Erawat elephant (white elephant) and Mahalakshmi are worshipped. Puja is performed by lighting lamps, incense sticks, flowers etc. This day, minimum of hundred lamps and maximum of one lakh lamps are lighted.

Next day lord Indra is worshiped. Brahmans are offered sugar mixed with ghee and Kheer. Additionally they are given Dhoti etc. clothes, lamps (if possible of gold) and donations. This fast is specially observed for getting Lakshmi (wealth). It is believed, lord Indra and Mata Lakshmi watch that who all are awake. Hence, person observing Jagran gets wealth.

This fast is chiefly observed by ladies. The ones observing fast, draw a Swastika on wooden stool and place an urn of water on it. A glass full of wheat and wheat is kept over it. Thitrteen grains of wheat are taken in hand and the story of fast is heard.

The glass and money are given to the lady narrating the story by touching her feet. Ardhya of water is offered to the moon. After this, food is eaten. There is a tradition of gifting Kheer in temple, on this day. A watermelon is cut into two halves. also, any seasonal fruit and Kheer is kept in the moonlight.

Sharad Purnima Story

A moneylender had two daughters. On of them used to complete the fast in a systematic manner and the other used to observe the fast but leave it incomplete. As a result, child born to the 2nd daughter always used to die. Tensed by this situation, the second daughter asked Pandits the reason behind it. Pandits told her that all this was happening because she used to leave the fasts incomplete. They asked her to observe the fast of Sharad Purnima to keep her child alive.

She laid her dead child on a bed and covered him with a cloth. Then, she called her sister and asked her to sit. As the clothes of her elder sister touched the baby, he came back to life. The elder sister scolded her and said that if by chance she would have sat on the baby, he could have died. The 2nd daughter of the moneylender said, “the baby was already dead. He got his life back on getting touched by your clothes.” From that time, tradition of observing the fast of Sharad Purnima is carried on.

This fast is observed for longevity of child and receiving wealth. This day, idol of goddess Lakshami is established and worshipped with Shodashopachara. After fasting for the whole day, 100 lamps of gold, silver and mud are lighted when moon is emerged. Bhajans are sung in the Jagran, at night. Next day morning, idol of Mata Lakshami is handed over to an Acharya.

Gauri Vrat Story

 

Long time ago, a merchant named Dharampal lived in a city. He had a very beautiful wife and
sufficient wealth. But, they were not at all happy as they had no children. However, by the grace of God they obtained a son who was unfortunately short lived (Alpayu) as he was cursed of death by snake bite at the age of sixteen. But fortunately, he was married before he achieved that age (sixteen) with a girl whose mother observed the Mangala Gauri Vrat. 

As a result, she was blessed with a daughter who would never face widowhood. So, Dharampal’s son achieved a life span of hundred years. Thus, all the newly married women should perform this pujan and observe this vrat for long, consistent and happy conjugal life. Those who cannot observe fast should at least perform the pooja.

After hearing the above sacred tale, the married women offer 16 laddus to their mother-in-law and sister-in-laws. Thereafter, they offer the same Prasada to a Brahmin. After completing this ritual, devotees perform Nirajan (aarti) of the 16 wick lamps before the Goddess. The next day i.e. on Wednesday, the idol of Devi Mangala Gauri is immersed in a pond or lake. This poojan and vrat is performed for five consecutive years for happiness of the family.

About Dussehra Festival

The festival of Dussehra is celebrated for ten days in the month of Ashvin, or Ashwayuja as per the Hindu lunar calendar (September or October) from Shukla Paksha Pratipada, or the day after the new moon which falls in Bhadrapada, to Dashami, or the tenth day of Ashvin.The day culminates a nine day fasting period of Navratri in the Hindu culture.

The festival is celebrated with zest and festivities as it also marks the beginning of the winter season after the long, unbearably, hot summer.Dussehra marks the victory of Rama over the  demon king Ravana and the rescue of his wife, Sita.In Nirth India , gigantic effgies of the ten-headed Ravana, his brother , Kumbhakarna and son Meghnand are set aflame amidst bureting of crackers.Fairs are usally held on this occasion with lots to eat, buy an enjoy.

Dussehra means the Tenth Day, being the tenth day of the bright half of Ashwin.This day is also known as Vijayadashmi.(Vijay means victory and ashami being the tenth day), commemorating Rama's victory over Ravana.

Dussehra Festival Story

There are two Story about Dussehra Festival.One says that this day celebrates the victory of Durga over the demon mahishasura.The other story tell us that Rama prayed to Durga for help to defeat the demon king Ravana, who was the king of Lanka.

Kausta, the young son of  Devdatt. a Brahmin was living in the city of paithan.After studying under the guidance of Rishi Varatantu , he insted onj the guru accepting a present or gurudakshina.Initrially the guru refused but later asked for 140 million gold coins, one hundred million for each of the subjects taugh.The obedient student went to King Raghu to ask for the money, as trhe king was renowned for his generosity.Within three days, the king made the God of Wealth, Kuber, make a rain of  gold coinbs near the shanu and apti trees.After giving the promised amount to the guru Kausta  distributed the rest of the coins among the needy on the day of Dussehra.Even today , in Ayodhya , the capital of King Raghu, people loot the leaves of the apti trees and present them to each other as 'sona' or or gold.
