Govardhan Puja-Annakut Mahotsav-New Year Day-Govandhan Puja Celebration and Rituals-Legends

Govardhan Puja or Annakut Mahotsav is held a day after the  Diwali in the month of Kartik on  Gujarati New year day.According to the Hindu calendar it falls on the first lunar day called as 'Ekam' of the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight of moon) in the month of Kartik. It forms an integral part of Diwali celebrations. Govardhan Puja commemorates the victory of Lord Krishna over Indra.On this day in many houses and temples , Annakoot puja is performed by preparing Chappan Bhog which contains fifty six varieties of food items which are offered to God. 


Govardhan Puja is performed with great zeal and enthusiasm and in the states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. In this pooja, there is a tradition of building cow dung hillocks, which symbolize the Mount Govardhan, the mountain which was once lifted by Lord Krishna. After making such hillocks people decorate them with flowers and then worship them. They move in a circle all round the cow dung hillocks and offer prayers to Lord Govardhan.
The preparation of 'Annakoot' is an integral part of the Govardhan Puja. The word 'Annakoot' means ‘mountain of food’.

In some Indian states, Govardhan Puja is celebrated by making the hillocks of cow-dung which represents the Mount Govardhan. Then people decorate the hillocks by flowers and worship them. Devotees make rounds around the hillocks and pray to Lord Govardhan to save their life as always. At some places, it is celebrated as a part of the Diwali such as the Padva or Bali Pratipada to commemorate the King Bali. And at some places, it is enjoyed as a Gujarati New Year because the Vikram Samvat begins at this day.


Annakut



The fourth day of diwali celebrations is also observed as Annakut, which literally means 'mountain of food'. On this auspicious day the people prepare fifty-six or one hundred and eight different varieties of delicious dishes to offer Lord Krishna as 'Bhog'. In the temples, specifically in Mathura and Nathdwara, the deities are given milk bath, dressed in new shining attires and decorated with ornaments of dazzling diamonds, pearls, rubies and other precious stones and metals. Then they are worshipped, offered prayers and bhajans and also offered delicious sweets, fruits and eatables that are ceremoniously raised in the form of a mountain before the idols.

The festival symbolises the importance and worship of nature in our lives. Govardhan Parbat is said to have saved its inhabitants from incessant rains.According to Vishnu Puran, the people of Gokul used to worship Lord Indra and celebrated a festival in his honour as he was considered to be the provider of rains. Once, Lord Krishna stopped them from offering prayers to Indra and worship mountains and cattle as they were the actual source of rains and cultivators of field, respectively. Lord Indra, in a rage, sent a deluge to submerge Gokul.
It is then, that Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Parbat on his little finger, to provide shelter for the people of Gokul.Govardhan Puja is known as ‘Padva’ or ‘Bali Pratipada’ in Maharashtra, as it commemorates King Bali who is believed to come out of Pataal Lok to rule over his kingdom in Bhu Lok every year on this day.

Gujarati New Year also known as Padwa or Nutan Varsh or Bestu Varsh is celebrated on the next day of the Diwali day, on the first day of the bright fortnight or Shukla Paksha of the Hindu month of Kartik.(first day of month).Nutan Varsh 2017 which commences on  October 31 is also referred as Vikram Samvatsar and Hindu New Year.Bestu Varas is New Year in Gujarati and Varsha-pratipada or Padwa are other names of the same.According to the legends, Lord Krishna once performed Govardhan Pooja along with the people of Vraja for their protection from heavy rains. Since then, it became a tradition to worship Govardhan Parvat and celebrate this day as a New Year.

Gujarati New year day is mostly celebrated Gujarati People in Gujarat state of India.On this day people get up early morning.They make colorful Rangoli Design on their door step.They welcome and wish "Happy New Year", Nutan Varsha Abhinandan", " Sal Mubarak" which means Happy New Year and distributes sweets each other.Some People Start their business ,open  shops.In many temples decorate and Annakut give god.Many people  go to temples and take blessing god.The Annakut is left for darshan for the devotees till evening, and then the items are taken down. The now sanctified prasad - of sweets and dry foodstuffs are distributed as prasad.
 

On this day in Gujarat is the time to make merry. Since these celebrations are escalated at the time of Diwali, it marks a mirthful experience for all the gujjus. Almost all Gujarati houses are lighted colorfully and decorated with flowers. On this day, people dress up nicely and visit temples with flowers and mithai. Everyone wish each other New Year whilst offering prayers to God. Some temples in Gujarat also conduct a grand Govardhan Pooja. 

A lavish meal at the end of the day credits the festival spirit. Most of the Gujaratis indulge in heavy eating this day. Thus, New Year in Gujarat reflects the true spirit of Indian tradition. The essence of Gujarati culture and religion can be felt in the New Year celebrations. Love, unity and togetherness are the intangible assets of these celebrations.

About Cheti Chand Festival

Cheti Chand Festival is major celebration in india and Pakistan.Cheti chand Festival is known as Sindhi New Year and Jhulelal Jayanti(birthday of Sindhi patron saint Jhulelal), Varun Jayanti( Birthday of water God).The Sindhi community is seen wishing each other in the native Sindhi Language “Cheti Chand jyon Lakh Lakh Wadayun Athav”, which means lacs of wishes for Happy Cheti Chand.Hence people worship water – the elixir of life on the occasion of Cheti Chand. This day is considered to be very auspicious and many Sindhis take Baharana Sahib to a nearby river or lake. Baharana Sahib consists of Jyot (Oil Lamp), Misiri (Crystal Sugar), Phota (Cardamom), Fal (Fruits), and Akha. Behind is Kalash (Water jar) and a Nariyal (Coconut) in it, covered with cloth, phool (flowers) and patta (leaves). There is also a murti (idol)  of Pujya Jhulelal Devta.
Businessmen start new accounts books on this day. It is considered an auspicious day to start new initiatives. People greet each other with "Cheti Chand jyon lakh lakh wadayun athav". The aarti of Jhulelal is performed and then men perform the folk dance, Chej before Jhulelal. Tahiri and Chole are typically distributed as prasad. Tahiri is a rice pudding made with milk.

The legend says that on this particular day Varun Devta appeared as Jhulelal for the first time to tell people that he is here to help and protect Sindhis who were oppressed by a dictator. People participate in the celebration of Cheti Chand with great enthusiasm, vigor and pomp. Major ‘Aarthi’ and worshipping of Jhulelal is done on this day. As it is the birthday of Water God great importance is given to water on this day.
One very important event takes place during this day called the Chaliho Sahib which is a 40 day event when the followers don’t shave or buy new clothes or use soap and oil. They engage in worshipping Water God and sing songs to him for peace and solace. After this 40 day event people thank their God and celebration takes place as ‘thanks giving Day’. On the auspicious occasion of Cheti Chand people carry oil lamp, crystal sugar, cardamom and fruits to river Sindhu and worship the river as well as Jhulelal. This great event is observed by both men and women all over India by Sindhi community. They take great pride in celebrating this day and it is also a time where all the members of the family meet and enjoy their time together. The women of the house prepare a variety of dishes and serve the people in the house with love. People often go to temples and donate food and clothes to poor people.

 Cheti Chand Significance

King Markh Shah of Sind believed in converting Hindus into Muslims. He used force and torure to convert the Hindus. Hindus were greatly perturbed. They gathered at the banks of the river Indus and went on fast. They pleaded God to come to their prayers. Their prayers were answered and God appeared before them coming out of the flowing Indus-waters. He said to them that he'll soon take birth in the house of Ratanchand and save them from the tyranny of Markh Shah. Udero was born in the city of Nasarpur on the first day of the month of Chaitra. He checked king Markh Shah in his tyrannical pursuits of proselytizing the Hindus. Now this story has got historical as well as scientific basis. Nasarpur town still stands near Thatta, the capital of Sindh, when Markh Shah ruled. Udero's first name was Udaychand meaning the rising one. Uderolal is said to have been born on the first day of the Chaitra month. Which is considered the first day of our new year. Sindhis have Cheti Chand (First day of Chaitrra) as their New Year Day. Cheti Chand is considered as the birthday of our Udero.

Cheti Chand or Gudi Padwa Celebration In Maharashtra 


Gudi Padwa is one of the major festivals celebrated by the people of Maharashtra.Gudi Padwa is falls on the first day of the Hindu month of Chaitraand according to English Calander mostly celebrate in month of March-April.The day of Gudi Padwa starts with the cleaning ritual, in which the house is fully cleaned (in case of villages, it is then covered with fresh cow-dung). Thereafter, women and children indulge in the drawing as well as coloring of intricate rangoli designs on the doorsteps. Usually, vibrant colors are chosen for the rangoli, in keeping with the spirit of the festival. Every member of the family wears new clothes and eats soonth panak and chana usal, the specialties of the day.
Other delicacies made on Gudhi Padwa festival include Shrikand and Poori. In the earlier days, family members used to start the day by eating the leaves of neem tree. However, the tradition is not as rigidly followed these days. Usually, people consume a paste of neem leaves (combined with ajwain, jaggery and tamarind). The leaves as well as the paste are believed to cleanse blood and toughen the immune system.
