Kali Chaudas or Narak Chaturdashi or Choti Diwali is Celebrated this year on 28 th October Friday 2016, and According to Gujarati month Kali Chaudas celebrated month of Ashwin day of 14.

About Kali Chaudas -Narak Chaturdashi-Choti Dowali

Kali means Dark (evil) and Chaudas - Fourteenth. Thus, celebrated 14th day of Ashwin, Kali Chaudas is the day allotted to the worship of Maha-Kali or Shakti and is believed that on this day Kali killed the wicked Raktavija. Also referred to as Narak-Chaturdashi, Kali Chaudas is day to abolish laziness and evil which create hell in our life and shine light on life. The strength to protect others is referred as Kali, and if its used for God's work it is called Mahakali. The auspicious day, which falls a day before Diwali, is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Mahakali. In Gujarat, the day is also dedicated to Hanuman worship.

Usually, Narak Chaturdashi is observed on Kali Chaudas day.It must be noted that the Amavasi in the month of Ashwin is dedicated to Kali Puja in eastern parts of India. Diwali day is dedicated to worship of Kali in Bengal, Orissa, Jharkhand and Assam. Tantric practitioners perform special pujas on the day.

The Rituals of Kali Choudas is strongly suggestive of the origin of Deepavaali as an harvest festival is performed. On this day delicacies are prepared from pounded semi-cooked rice (called Poha or Pova). This rice is taken from the fresh harvest available at that time. This custom is prevalent both in rural and urban areas especially in Western India.

On this day, a head wash and application of kajal in the eyes is believed to keep away the kali nazar (evil eye). Some say that those who are into tantra, learn their 'mantras' on this day. Alternatively, people offer Nived (food) to the goddess that is local to where they are originally from. This goddess is called their 'Kul Devi', in order to cast off evil spirits. Some families also offer food to their forefathers on this day. The second day of Diwali is known as Kali Choudas in Gujarat, Rajasthan & few part of Maharashtra. This reverence is called "Kali Chaudas or Kal Chaturdasi".

Significance of Kali Chaudas or Narak Chaturdashi 2016

Kali Chaudas or Naraka-Chaturdashi is day to abolish laziness and evil. It is also known as as Kali Chaudas, where Kali means dark (eternal) and Chaudas means fourteenth, which is celebrated on the 14th day of the dark half of Kartik month. On this day goddess Kali is worshipped and it is believed that on this day Kali killed the asura (demon) Narakasura.

About Sankashti Chaturti Vrat

Sankashti Chaturti Vrat and Pooja is observed on the fourth day after Purnima or full moon. Sankashti Chaturti Vrat Dedicated to Hindu God Lord Ganesha.Sankashta means sankat (crisis). In case the Sankashti Chaturthi vrat occurs on a Tuesday, it is considered to be highly fortunate and is known as Angaraki Sankashti Chaturthi.In North India Sankashti Chaturthi during Magha month is known as Sakat Chauth.

On this day Devotees fast for a whole day and break their fast after having darshan of Moon and worshiping Lord Ganesha.For most people Sankashti Chaturti is a complete fast which is broken after sighting the moon and performing puja. There are also people who observe partial fast.Devotees believe that all of their obstacles and problems in life vanish by observing this Vrat. Some devotees observe complete fast while some prefer taking fruits and milk. However, Sabudana Khichdi, nuts and potato are taken during the day by majority of the people.

For most people Sankashti Chaturti is a complete fast which is broken after sighting the moon and performing pooja. There are also people who observe partial fast.

About Kajli Teej Vrat

Kajli Teej, Badi Teej or Kajari Teej, is observed on third day after Shravan Purnima i.e. Krishna Paksha Tritiya in Bhadra month as per North Indian calendars.On this day women perform Sri Krishna Puja and neem pooja. This is the biggest of all three Teej festivals celebrated in the North. Kajli Teej is the festival celebrated to welcome monsoon season in grand manner. It is celebrated with utmost enthusiasm in Bundi.The Kajli Teej festival is one of the most popular festivals in Rajasthan. Though the festival is celebrated in various parts of Rajasthan but Kalji Teej festival of Bundi is most attractive.

Kajli Teej Vrat Katha

Goddess Parvati is worshipped by seekers of conjugal bliss and happiness. An elaborate procession is taken out in Jaipur for two consecutive days on the festive occasion, which is watched by people in large numbers. The Teej idol is covered with a canopy whereas the Gangaur idol is open.
Teej festival is celebrated all over the state with each region having its own unique touch. Kajli Teej of Bundi is different in several ways- while Teej is celebrated on the third day of the month of Shravana, in Bundi it is celebrated on the third day of the month of Bhadra.
The festival starts with the procession of goddess Teej in a decorated palanquin from the beautiful Naval Sagar. It passes through the main bazaars and terminates at Azad Park. The procession has decorated elephants, camels, bands, performing artists and colourfully dressed people.
The people who gather here from surrounding areas also get to watch and participate in the cultural programmes that are organised in the evenings. it provides a very good chance to see performances by local artists from Hadoti region.
Though the main function of Teej is held only on two days, the celebrations continue upto Janmashtami, which marks the birth of Lord Krishna.
To celebrate the auspicious occasion of Teej, women fast for longevity and healthy of their husband. They refrain themselves from water and food whole day and perform various rituals associated with the festival. In the evening a special Vrat (fast) katha is chanted. These are stories based on Hindu legends which are narrated to ladies who gather to conclude their fast ceremony. Teej Vrat Katha is very crucial feature of Teej celebrations.

Kajli Teej Pooja Procces

First collect some fine sand and make a pond of it as shown in the picture. It should be made properly so that water does not leak out from it. Then tie all the neem stems together neatly and fix it in the middle edge of the pond as shown in the picture. And then put red odhini on top of the neem stem. Then place Ganeshji n Laxmiji’s Idol near it. As you know, every puja is incomplete without them.

Now, first make Swastik on the small pot of water (lauta) which is to be used for puja. Tie moli
or a red thread around it. Then stick some rice on the Swastik and some Gur and Sattu also.
And then in the same manner make Swastik where the puja is to be done. Place moli, rice, gur, sattu and a coin on it. Now first of all do puja of Ganeshji and Laxmiji. Mark their forehead with kumkum and rice.
Offer them moli, sattu, gur, fruits and coins.

And then in the same way do Teej puja or Neem puja. Then offer Sattu to Teej Mata.
Pour some milk and water in the pond.
Then the married women have to give seven round dots of kumkum, mehndi and kajol each near the pond. And then unmarried girls have to give sixteen dots in the same manner explained above. Then they lit Agarbatti and Dipak to begin their Vrat Katha. After completing the Vrat Katha
women need to see reflection of all the things (sattu, fruits, coins and odhini ) which are offered
to teej mata in the pond. They also see Dipak and their jewelries in it.
After reading the Vrat Katha and singing the Teej songs they all bow down to Teej Mata to pray
and to get blessings from her. And then they Stand up and walk gently (Give Pheri) around the Teej
Mata three times.

About Solah Somvar Vrat

Solah Somvar Vrat is observed for sixteen consecutive Mondays and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. A devotee can start Solah Somvar Vrat on the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of moon) in any month. But devotees usually begin the fasting in Shravan or Kartik month. Solah Somvar Vrat is observed by women to get good husbands and many also observe it when they are blessed with a good married life. It is also believed that observing this Vrat will help in getting one’s wishes fulfilled.During this fast sixteen consecutive Mondays are devoted to Lord Shiva. However, married women and males also observe this fast, but for different reasons. Married women observe it for long married life, and men for happy and peaceful life.

Solah somvar vrat can be started in any month during the Shukla Paksh phase (bright lunar fortnight). Some devotees even opt for the Chaturmas period for observing this solah somvar vrat. The fast begins at sunrise and ends at sunset. Generally partaking of one-time meal is allowed, but some like to observe fast for complete 24 hours. You can have nuts, milk and fruits during the fasting day, still some believe to observe the fast empty stomach. Read later part of this article for more details. Let’s begin with narrating the historical significance of this vrat first. Following is a Katha, which solidifies the belief of devotees, also the reason behind to observe this fast.

Devotee is expected to wake up early in the morning, and take bath. After that, devotee should go to Shiva temple. If you are unable to go temple then you can perform puja at home too. On all Mondays,detailed puja is performed with 16 offerings to Lord Shiva. Recital of Katha is also a part of puja. During the fast devotees are allowed to eat fruit, milk, thick sweet roti (naivedyam, prepared of jaggery), but, consumption of salt is strictly prohibited. Naivedyam is a Shiv prasad which is equally divided into three parts, before offering it to god. From three parts, one part is offered to the god, one part is distributed among friends and relatives and the third part is eaten by the devotee. You can eat a complete meal after breaking your fast in the evening. On the 17th Monday, the devotee offers a mahapuja to Shiva at a Shiva temple. You can also contact the local priest for more specific details pertaining to this fast.

This fast is done to please Lord Shiva, the god who can easily be pleased. It is said one who observes this fast gets his/her wish fulfilled in no time. Once you start the fast, then it is essential to complete 16 Mondays, otherwise you may be deprived of receiving shiv shakti blessings to boost your luck.

Solah Somvar Vrat Legends

As per the Hindu scriptures, it is believed that it was during the month of Saavan when the Samudra Manthan (Churning of the milk ocean) took place. While churning the ocean by gods and demons, a lot of things came out. One of the most deadliest thing was poison (Halahala). For saving the world from the bad effects of poison, it was swallowed by Lord Shiva, as no one else could do it.

Thus, Lord Shiva acted as the savior of the universe by consuming the poison. Since then, he is also worshiped as Neelkanth. Hence, the month of Savan is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Thus, worshiping Lord Shiva during the days of Sawan Somvar is given utmost importance.

Akshaya Tritiya or Akha Teej is a very auspicious and holy day. This is day when every minute of the day is auspicious and there is no need for mahurats for any form of work. Akshaya Tritiya usually falls on Shukla Paksha Tritiya of Vaishakha month. This day is considered to be free of all malefic effects.people conduct special Pujas (worship rituals), bathe in holy rivers, make a charity or donation, offer eatables to the burning fire, and worship various Hindu deities. Praying to Lord Ganesha before starting any new venture on this day is believed to remove any incoming obstacles or hurdles. Devotees also pray to Lord Shiva for health, marriage, and saubhagya (good luck); Lord Krishna for moksha (salvation); and Devi Laxmi for wealth.The main Puja and prayers on this day are all dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. In most houses simple Vishnu Puja is done in the morning with Tulsi leaves and flowers. Elaborate Lakshmi Pujan or Lakshmi Kubera Havan is also performed at many places. Gaja Pooja: Jupiter is the ruling planet of this magnificent animal. The elephant is a symbol of respect, honor, magnanimity and power. First the elephant is bathed, then dressed and decorated, offered light, incense, flowers and food while Vedic priests voice the appropriate mantras and chants. This invokes the blessings of Lord Ganesha, the elephant headed God who removes all obstacles.

Ashwa Pooja: The horse is first bathed, decorated and dressed and then only the Pooja is offered. Horse gram is then offered to the ashwa. The horse is a symbol for the planet Mars that represents energy and command.

Cow Pooja: The cow and her calf are first bathed, dressed and decorated and then only the pooja is offered. The cow is the symbol of love and ever giving and is the symbolic of the Planet Venus.
