Nandotsav or Nanda Mahotsav (Parna) and Dahi Handi 2018 in Sri Krishna Temples

Nand Mahotsav is festival celebrated on next day of Shri Krishna Janmashtami.In this year 2018 Nandotsav date is 3rd September.

It is said that all the villagers of Vraj visited Nanda's house to have darshan of beby Shri Krishna.All Munis and maharshis bestowed their blessings on little Krishna.Child Krishna is swung in a cradle and even today,lineage-holders dress up as Yashoda and swing their Beloved Krishna.

Dahi Handi

This most popular ceremony of Dahi-handi takes place on the second day of celebrations. The celebration of Krishna's birth is also known as "Dahihandi". An earthen pot or "matka" or "handi" filled with curds, milk, curds, butter, honey, fruits and "jvari" is tied from a high rope about 20 to 40 feet high. The rope also has prize money tied to it. This prize money is distributed among those who participate in the building the pyramid. It is a spectacular sight to see.

Young men form a human pyramid to break the pot. To do so they climb, constructing a human pyramid by standing over each other's shoulders till the pyramid is tall enough to enable the person at the top to reach the pot and claim the contents after breaking it.

A popular image of Krishna was and still is......Krishna stealing dahi or butter from an earthen pot. During his childhood, the naughty and adventurous Lord Krishna along with his mates used to raid the houses of his neighbors in search of milk and butter, they too would build a human pyramid and plunder the pots of milk and butter. This ceremony replicates Krishna's love for milk and butter.

Once the pot is broken, the contents are eaten as "prasad" amidst acclamations of "Govind" which is another name for Krishna.

About Janmashtami(Gokulashtami)

Janmashtami festival in India which commemorates Lord Krishna's birth, has several interesting aspects to its celebration. The festival of Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated throughout the Country marking the birth of Govinda.Lord Krishna is considered as a newborn and people love him, pamper him, and show respect for him on this day.Janmashtami is celebrated to welcome and enjoy Lord Krishna’s birth. The birth of Lord Krishna took place when the various planets were in auspicious places. It is said that God chooses a particular time, as to when he will take birth as a human and the planetary systems are adjusted accordingly.

On the day of Janmashtami, people perform special Poojas, keep fast, sing Bhajans, and dance to celebrate the birth of Krishna.The temples in these places are decorated and special Jhankis (tableaus) are organized. Lord Krishna is pampered as a newborn. People offer sweets and Jhulas (swing) to the newborn Krishna.Temples are decorated for the occasion, Kirtans are sung, bells are rung, the conch is blown, and Sanskrit hymns are recited in praise of Lord Krishna. At Mathura, the birthplace of Lord Krishna, special spiritual gatherings are organized at this time. Pilgrims from all over India attend these festive gatherings.

Dahi Handi Festival Celebration in Mumbai

Dahi Handi is usually held on the second day of Gokulashtami celebrations, and is very popular in Mumbai. “Govinda Ala Re Ala”, the birth of Lord Krishna is carried out in the various parts of Mumbai.The celebration of Dahi Handi festival depicts the love of Govinda toward butter, milk, Dahi (curd), and sweets. Various “Dahi Handi” events are organized in Mumbai where young boys make a Toli (troops) to perform this ceremony. Usually in the Dahi Handi ceremony, a group of boys make a human pyramid to break the Handi, which is tied in the air. The Dahi Handi festival is also a depiction of one of the Govinda’s Leela's.

This year some of the Han dis were extra heavy with as much as Rs. 1 lake, put in for the winners. According to an office-bearer of the co-ordination committee one such Handy in Thane was kept at a height of nearly 40′ but that did not deter the enthusiastic Govindas from trying out their luck. Other prestigious Handis which attracted many groups were at Dadar, Mazgaon and Lalbaug.Dahi Handi generally takes place on the second day of Janmashtami.Young men in Mumbai yell ‘Ala re Ala, Govinda Ala’ during the ceremony.An earthen pot containing a mixture of milk, dry fruits, ghee is hung around 20-30 feet high in the air with the help of a rope. Silver coins are hung along with the rope,which are later distributed as prize to the winners. Enthusiastic young men, form a human pyramid by standing one on top of the other, trying to break the pot. Onlookers throw water on the young men in order to prevent them from breaking the pot. Breaking of the pot is followed by prize distribution. Devotees believe that the broken pieces of earthen pot will keep away mice and negative powers from their homes.

Dahi Handi has become competitive as several cash prizes are given away to the winners. Cash prizes depend upon how many tiers are displayed in the human pyramid, how professionally it is carried out and the celebrity attraction. Generally ‘mandals’ commence practice much in advance. Some localities offer prizes to the tune of Rs. 1 Million. Film personalities attending the program are often a highlight. Banners announcing the cash prize for Dahi Handi are displayed almost everywhere cross the city. Celebrities performing in the event are a major draw as is a Bollywood actor showing a film trailer of a soon-to-be-released movie. Foreign troupes such as the one that came to Mumbai to perform in 2012 and train the ‘Govindas’ in acrobatics to make the pyramid professionally has also been welcomed.

About Dahi Handi Festival

Dahi Handi is one such festival, which is eagerly awaited by all and is celebrated with lot of gusto and enthusiasm. This day commemorates the birth of Lord Krishna who is the eight incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Dahi Handi is a popular ceremony, celebrated with lot of enthusiasm and glee. Dahi Handi is an enactment of Lord Krishna's efforts to steal butter from Matka (earthen pot) suspended from the ceiling.Dahi Handi is usually held on the second day of Gokulashtami celebrations, and is very popular in Mumbai.

On this day a Handi (clay pot), filled with butter milk or curd, is positioned at a convenient height prior to the event above the ground and a group of men make a human pyramid to break the Handi with the help of a blunt object or coconut. The spilled butter milk or curd over the group symbolizes their achievement and unity.This group of young and enthusiast men call themselves Govinda.

Significance Of Dahi Handi

Dahi Handi is called 'Uriadi' in Tamil Nadu which forms a major event in the celebrations associated with Gokulashtami.Dahi Handi though portrays the playful and adoringly mischievous attitude of Krishna, it also carries a profound philosophy behind it. The pot is the ego or the sense of the body mind identification that dangles in the grasp of Samsara. The butter or Dahi which forms the content is embodied as the essence, or the being. The Lord breaks the pot or the ego to release the content from the binding Samsara. His eagerness to savour it reveals the bliss that one enjoys on realising the true essence or the true self.

It can also be taken as the Lord's instruction to break the body mind complex which is portrayed as the pot to attain true bliss on realizing the essence, the true self, portrayed as the contents of the pot.

However to break the illusion of the body mind complex is not an easy task as one will have to focus steadfastly on realising the essence or the ultimate with devotion. Distractions from around disturb one from attaining the truth, however one pointed focus and devotion to the Lord will ultimately lead one to the goal.Lets us hence celebrate Dahi Handi grasping the philosophy behind it and seek the Lord's blessings to realise our true self.
