Ahoi Ashtami is a festival celebrated on the 8th day of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. This festival is celebrated mostly in North India and falls approximately 4 days after Karwa Chauth and 8 days before Deepawali. This year this festival will be celebrated on 12th of October, 2017.

This festival is celebrated in the form of a fast kept by mothers for the well being of their children. This festival is also presumed to mark the beginning of Deepawali, the festival of lights. Mothers who are blessed with sons get up in the morning, like in Karwa Chauth Vrat, and put water in an earthen pot and worship Goddess Ahoi. Mothers don't eat or drink anything the whole day and in the evening, they offer Puja and Bhog to Mother Ahoi (food comprising Poori, Halwa, Chana etc) and break the fast after seeing the stars.

The difference between the fast of Ahoi Ashtami and Karwa Chauth is that Karwa Chauth Vrat is ended after seeing the Moon whereas the Ahoi Ashtami Vrat is ended after seeing the Stars. Before the Bhog of Mother Ahoi, a story of a mother having 7 sons is also narrated.

Ahoi Ashtami fast is undertaken by mothers of boys for the long life and happiness of their sons. They worship Goddess Ahoi on this day with full devotion and fervour. On this day women observe a fast for their sons. The time for sighting the stars and moonrise can be seen in the Ahoi Ashtami Puja timings in the Hindu panchang.

It is believed that women who face miscarriage or have problems in conceiving should perform the Ahoi Ashtami puja and vrat to get blessed with a baby boy. For this reason, it is also known as ‘Krishnashtami’. This day is therefore significant for childless couples. On this occasion, couples take a holy dip in the ‘Radha Kunda’ at Mathura. Know About Rath Yatra or Chariot festival significance, history and celebrations

Jagannath Rath Yatra attracts a massive crowd of Hindu pilgrims from across India and even around the world, who join the procession every year in Puri, Odisha.

The cart festival of Lord Jagannath, traditionally known as the Jagannath Rath Yatra, is said to be the oldest of its kind and marks the return of Lord Krishna to Vrindavan with his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra. Also known as Rathjatra or Chariot festival, it attracts huge crowds of Hindu pilgrims who join the procession every year in Puri, Odisha.

 

The rath yatra is a journey in a chariot accompanied by the public and it usually commences in the month of June or July. Three chariots of the deities with the temple in the background are led onto a 3km street in Puri, popularly known as Bada Danda. The procession culminates at the Shri Gundicha Temple, where the deities revel in a nine-day stay. After that, they ride the chariots back to Shri Mandir. This year, the festival is all set to commence on June 25 and the return cart festival or Bahuda Jatra will fall on July 3.

Considering the “body to be the chariot” and “the soul of the deity to be instilled inside it”, the concept of chariot festival has been explained in Kathopanishada in Sanskrit as:

"Atmanam rathinam viddhi sareeram rathamevatu,
Buddhim tu saarathim viddhi marah pragrahameva cha!"

The phrase gives out the message to let your wisdom be the charioteer so that it can “control the mind and its thoughts”. It is believed that people who attend the festival can find their way towards heaven after death.

The celebration begins with the pounding of drums and mridangams as the Gajapati King cleanses the road before the chariots with a gold-handled broom and sprinkles sandalwood water and powder with utmost devotion. The Rath Yatra at Puri makes for a fascinating sight as millions of people from the whole state and different corners of the country seek for darshan, or the holy view. The celebrations date back to the period of the Puranas. Vivid descriptions of this festival have been found in Brahma Purana, Padma Purana, and Skanda Purana.

Savitri was the beautiful and charming daughter of king Aswapati of Madra Desa. She had chosen
Satyawaan as her life's partner who was a prince in exile, living in the forest with his blind father Dyumatsen. The princess savitri left the dignitaries of palace and started living in forest with her husband and the in-laws in the forest. She took all pains and started looking to all her responsibilities as a devoted wife and daughter in-law.One unfortunate day, Satyawaan fell down from a tree and expired in the lap of his beloved wife, Savitri. As soon as the Satyawaan died, Yamraj appeared to take away the soul of Satyawaan from his body. But the deeply moved wife of Satyawaan, Savitri strongly pleaded and appealed to Yamraj for her husband’s life. She cried and begged for not getting separated from her husband. If at all he would take away the soul of her husband she would also end her life. Yamraj, the god of death, moved by the sheer determination and love of Savitri and returned the life of her husband.

Satyawaan came to life again and both of them lived happily thereafter. Like this Savitri achieved her husband’s life back with her dedication and devotion towards her husband.

Vat Savitri Vrat Rituals

Early in the morning women take purificatory bath, wear new cloths, new bangles, apply sindoor (vermilion) on the fore-head and observe fasting. Women together at the nearest banyan trees (Vad tree, Peepal tree). They tie red threads around the banyan tree (Peepal tree) and pray for long life of their husband. Hindu Women also offering fruits and flowers to the banyan tree.

Indian Women also read “Savatri Katha” in the evening and do ritual worship (puja). After that women eat with water. At the end of the vrat, Indian women bow down to their husbands and also take blessings of elderly people in the home.

Vat Savitri Puja Celebration

Vat Savitri Puja is celebrated across the nations. But the festival is mainly observed in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Orissa and Maharashtra. South Indian married ladies especially of Tamil Nadu and Karanataka observe festival with the different name as Karadaiyan Nonbu.

Taking part in this festival requires one to follow a number of rituals and practices. Hindu married women observe the various rituals. They wake up early in the morning and take a bath to wear new clothes. They also wear new ornaments and apply vermilion on their forehead. Then they offer rice, wet pulses, lemon, banana and other fruits as bhog. The women also observe fast for the whole day. After, the puja is over, they consume this bhog. Moreover, bowing low in front of their respective husband is also an integral part of the rituals of this festival.

Sita Navami is celebrated as birth anniversary of Goddess Sita. This day is also known as Sita Jayanti. Married women keep fast on Sita Navami day and pray to seek long lives of their husbands.

Sita Jayanti is celebrated on Navami Tithi during Shukla Paksha of Vaishakha month. It is believed that Goddess Sita was born on Tuesday in Pushya Nakshatra. Goddess Sita was married to Lord Rama who was also born on Navami Tithi during Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month. On Hindu calendar Sita Jayanti falls after one month of Rama Navami.

Mata Sita is also known as Janaki as she was the adopted daughter of King Janaka of Mithila. Hence this day is also known as Janaki Navami. According to Hindu mythology, when King Janaka was ploughing the land to conduct a Yajna he found a baby girl in the Golden casket. The Golden casket was found inside the field while ploughing the land. A ploughed land is called Sita hence King Janaka named the baby girl as Sita. 

Sita Ma Birth Story

It is believed that Goddess Janaki was born on Tuesday in Pushya Nakshatra. A mythological story is famous regarding the birth of Mata. As per the story, once Agastya Rishi told - while traveling Himalaya, Ravan the king of Lanka saw a female sage. His mind was fascinated by the girl.

Ravan went near the girl and asked the reason behind her not getting married since now. Vedati named girl said that her father wants to marry her to Lord Vishnu. But, once a demon got charmed by her and killed her dad. In that sorrow her mother also died. From that day she has been meditating to get married to Lord Vishnu.

When Ravan came to know that the girl had no one, he tried wooing her with love. But on girl’s refusal, he forcibly caught her hairs. Vedvati had cut her hairs which Ravan was holding. She immediately jumped in fire and died. Before going in fire she cursed Ravan saying “I will take birth in form of a girl to take the revenge of the insult you did. And I will become the reason of your destruction.”

In the next life, she was born as lotus. As told by the astrologer, the lotus was thrown in sea. The lotus through water reached the Yagaya Mandap of King Janak’s land. King Janak got this girl from land called Jyoti. This girl was named Janaki in this birth and called Sita after marriage.

 Sita Navmi Fast Method

To observe this fast, person should wake up early in the morning on the day of fast. All rules related to fast should be followed. And after bathing etc., Goddess Janaki should be worshipped. Rice, barley, Til etc. used be used as materials of Puja. Observing this fast fulfills desires related to child. Goddess Parvati gave a blessing to Mata Sita. This blessing or boon is forward by Goddess Sita to people who observe this fast.

Mata Janaki is called incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. Observing this fast brings happiness, money in the house. Goddess Janaki is also called ‘Annapurna’ as she was born from earth. Observing this fast grows qualities like sacrifice, modesty, motherhood and dedication.

He is the last of the four great Vaishnava spiritual leaders. The other three saints were – Ramanujacharya, Madhvacharya, and Nimbakacharya.

History of Vallabhacharya Jayanti 

Vallabhacharya taught monism or theShuddhadvaita School of philosophy and it stresses that Shri Krishna is responsible for all animate and inanimate and only through His blessings can a human being attain Moksha. Worshipping Lord Krishna in the form of Shrinathji was introduced by Saint Vallabha.Legend has it that Vallabhacharya during one of his journeys to North West of India noticed a strange phenomenon near Mount Govardhan. 

There he saw a cow daily going to a particular spot in the mountain and shedding milk. Vallabhacharya asked people to dig the place and there they found the idol of Shree Nathji.It is said that Lord Krishna had given darshan to Vallabhacharya in the form of Shree Nathji and hugged him.Some people consider Vallabhacharya as an incarnation of Lord Agni, the fire god. Vallabha laid great stress on Pushti (grace) and Bhakti (devotion). The followers of Vallabhaacharya worship Bala Krishna, youngKrishna.The important literary works of Vallabhacharya based on the principles of Pushtimarg include Vyasa Sutra Bhashya, Jaimini Sutra Bhasya, Bhagavata Tika Subodhini, Pushti Pravala Maryada and Siddhanta Rahasya. Significance of Sheetala Ashtami

 

Sheetala Mata is known to cure ailments such as chicken-pox and small pox and measles. The Goddess seated on a donkey is seen holding neem leaves, broom, soup and a pot. Her magnificence has been mentioned in several religious scriptures. In the Skanda Purana, the benefit of worshipping Goddess Sheetala has been explained in details including Sheetala Mata Stotra or Sheetalashtak which was written by Lord Shiva. The day is dedicated to worshipping Goddess Sheetala. By worshipping the Goddess, devotees can prevent the outbreak of epidemic diseases, especially among children. 

Legend of Sheetala Ashtami

 

A king named Indralumna was ruling Hasthinapur. His daughter Shubhakari was married to prince Gunvan. Once, the king invited them to observe Sheetal Ashtami. The couple left for a lake and performed the vrat with devotion. Pleased with their dedication, Goddess Sheetala appeared before them and granted a boon to Shuhbakari. On their way back, Shubhakari saw a family of priest grieving over the death of the priest due to snakebite. Shubhakari used the boon to revive the priest from death. Locals realised the power of the Sheetal Ashtami vrat, and they too observe the vrat with great faith.

One story says Goddess Durga has incarnated as little Katyayani, the daughter of sage Katyayan to destroy all arrogant evil demonic forces of the world, in her real form as Durga, she killed many demons that were sent by Kaalkeya.

A demon named Jwarasur, the demon of fever, started spreading incurable diseases to Katyayani's childhood friends, such as cholera, dysentery, measles, smallpox etc. Katyayani cured the diseases of some of her friends. To relieve the world from all fevers and diseases, Katyayani assumed the form of Shitala Devi. Each of her four hands held a short broom, winnowing fan, jar of cooling water and a drinking cup. With her power, she cured all the children's diseases. Katyayani then requests her friend, Batuk to go out and confront the demon Jwarasur. A battle ensued between the young Batuk and demon Jwarasur. Jwarasur succeeds in defeating Batuk. Then, Batuk, lying dead, magically faded into dust. Jwarasur was shocked that Batuk disappeared and wondered where he went. Then, what he doesn't know that Batuk has assumed the form of an awful male figure. This person was three-eyed and had four arms. He held a battle-axe, sword, trident and demon head. He was pitch-black in color. His hair was flowing. Eyes blazed with fury. This figure wore a tiger-skin and a garland of skulls. Batuk assumed the form of Lord Shiva's ferocious form, the terrible Bhairav. Bhairav reprimands Jwarasur and tells him that he is the servant of Goddess Durga (Katyayani). A long discussion ensued but then converted into battle. Jwarasur created many demons from his powers but Bhairav managed to destroy all of them. Finally, Bhairav wrestled with Jwarasur and killed him with his trident.

The local lymph nodes of the lungs may also get infected and become enlarged. Tuberculosis can be treated successfully today with antibiotics.You can prevent yourself from disease and keep yourself healthy by eating loads of fruits and vegetables, exercising daily, stopping the consumption of alcohol and smoking.

You can prevent TB from spreading out by covering your mouth while coughing and sneezing. Windows should be kept open and the flow of fresh air  should be allowed. And the treatment should also be carried out till the end and medication should be continued even if the patient feels better.

India economy largely depends on agriculture.Erosion is seriously effecting the agricultural production.

Thirunakkara Arattu is held at the last day of the 10 days annual festival at Thirunakkara Shiva Temple. The major attraction of the festival is the nine caparisoned elephants take part in the Arattu procession, which starts in the afternoon. Folk arts and dances such as Mayilattom (peacock dance) and Velakali will be staged in the temple compound in the evening.

 

The annual 10-day festival at the Thirunakkara Temple draws to a close with the Arattu ceremony. Usually nine caparisoned elephants take part in the Arattu procession which begins in the afternoon. Folk arts like Mayilattom (peacock dance), Velakali etc, are presented in the temple compound in the evening. A major attraction is the all-night Kathakali performances on the third and fourth days of the festival.

The Mahadeva Temple which plays an important role in the festival is located on Thirunakkara Hill in Kottayam town. This temple is known for its ornate architecture.
