Mahesh Navmi or Mahesh Jayanti is celebrated on the ninth day of Shukla paksha of Jyestha month which falls in May-June in the Gregorian calendar .The day is dedicated to Lord Shiva and his wife Parvati. It is said that the Maheshwari community was formed on this day.This year MaheshNavmi orMahesh Jayanti is celebrated 21st Jnue 2018 and celebrated in 2019 on 11th June .

Mahesh Navmi  festival  is mainly celebrated by the devotees of Lord Shiva who is popularly known by various names, one of which is Mahesh. The name is a symbol of deep devotion towards Lord Shiva. It is believed that he appeared in front of his devotees for the first time on the auspicious day of Mahesh Navami. The day is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The business community Maheshwaris worships Lord Mahesh and his consort Parvati on the occasion of Mahesh Navami because it is believed that on the ninth day of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshta Maheshwari Community was came into existence. Hence, the day is celebrated as Mahesh Navami every year.

Mahesh Jayanti Significance and Legend

There is a special belief that women who wish for a child, perform special prayers on this day and Lord Shiva blesses them. A legend has it that King Khandelsen was childless. Hence, he worshipped Lord Shiva with utmost devotion, after which Lord Shiva fulfilled his wish by blessing him with a son named Sujansen.

Popular legend linked with Mahesh Navami says that once several hunters vented into an ashram and disturbed the serenity and tranquillity. The sages got angry with them and cursed them to become stone. Later, the wives of those hunters prayed to Lord Shiva and asked for the solution to get rid of the curse. Lord Shiva agreed to rescue them only if they promise to stop hunting and involve themselves in some other business. The women agreed on the condition and thus all the men were rescued. The salvaged hunters and their kin left hunting and concentrated on business, and they named their community as the Maheshwari community after Lord Mahesh to show their love and devotion towards Shiva. Hence, it is believed that Lord Shiva was the saviour of the ancestors of the community.

Mahesh Jayanti Rituals

Various yajnas and chants are performed throughout the night. Special Jhanki of Lord Shiva and his pictures are spread all across the homes of the devotees. Large pictures of Lord Shiva are taken to various homes of his followers. Prayers are chanted in his name and his sayings and praises could be heard across the streets. Abhishekam of the Lord is done and he along with Goddess Parvati is decorated elegantly in temples on this day.

When the pictures are returned from the streets, Bhajan Sandhya occurs in the temple premises and at last Prasad is offered to every devotee. There are as such no typical types of rituals that are being performed on this day. People celebrate this festival with utmost dedication and faith towards Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. There is a special belief that on this day, women who wish for a child, perform special prayers on this day and Lord Shiva blesses them with their wish. Not only in temples, yajnas and prayers are also performed by many people at their residence as well.

This festival marks the the ultimate devotion to Lord Shiva as he as is considered to be the harbinger of happiness and prosperity.

Akshar Deri is the sacred place in Gondal where Aksharbrahman Gunatitanand Swami was cremated.The highlight of this two-year long celebration is the ‘Aksharderi Sardh Shatabdi Mahotsav’, which will be celebrated in the divine presence of Pragat Brahmaswarup Mahant Swami Maharaj in Gondal. Everyone is invited to attend this unique occasion.

 About Vivaha Panchami

Vivaha panchami is an auspicious Hindu festival , which is celebrated to commemorate the divine marriage of Lord Ram (the prince of Ayodhya ) and Sita (princess of Janakpur).

It is observed on the fifth day of shukla paksh (the bright fortnight) in the month of Margashira as per the Hindu calendar. The festival is generally marked in late November and early December time according to the Georgian calendar .This festival is primarily celebrated in the Northern India, Mithilanchal and Nepal.

 

According to the Hindu epic Ramayana, King Janak of Mithila (Janakpur) organized a "Swayamver" ceremony where he invited many kings of various kingdoms and Sita the daughter of Janak was supposed to choose a groom for herself among them. However the condition was to lift the Shiva dhanusha and string it ,to be able to marry princess Sita . Thousands of kings and princes tried but could not even make it move a bit .Then Ram the prince of Ayodhya, lifted this gigantic heavy Shiva dhanush (bow) and string it. Breathless audience clapped and flower came from heaven, and princess Sita was wedded to Lord Ram.

To immortalize the wedding ceremony of Lord Ram, and Devi Sita, people have been celebrating the Vivaha Panchami with enormous dedication.

 

Vivaha Panchami Celebrations 

 

Vivaha Panchami is celebrated with great pomp and show in the birthplace of Lord Ram, Ayodhya. The wedding ceremonies are enacted with the idols of Lord Ram and Goddess Sita. The procession of Lord Ram’s ‘baraat’ is taken from one temple to another all the way from Ayodhya to ‘Janakpur’ where the marriage ceremonies take place. The event is popularly referred to as “Ram Vivah Utsav”. Devotees sing various ‘Bhajans’ in order to seek Lord Ram’s blessings. The famous religious song; “Hari Anant, Hari Katha Anant, Mangal Bhawan Amangal Hari” is sung by devotees.

The ceremonies culminate in the evening where devotees throng in huge numbers in Janakpur, the birthplace of Goddess Sita. Special ‘Pujan’ is held at the various temples situated there. People take a dip in the holy lakes of Mithilanchal like Gangasagar, Dhanushsagar and Argaza. The idols of the deities after the ‘Pranpratishtha’ rituals are dressed like bride and groom and taken out in processions and the enactment of their wedding take place at the famous Janaki temple. Thousands of devotees visit Nepal during this time and visit temples in order to seek blessings from the Lord for a happy married life.

‘Vivah Panchami’ is marked as the auspicious day to celebrate the union of two bodies into one soul for the seven life cycles one goes through before he/she attains salvation. Every couple which wants happiness in their life perform ‘pooja’ on this day.

 Seng Kut Snem Festival is celebrated 23rd November every year.

About Seng Kut Snem

Meghalaya is also known as a “Tribal Land” with a number of tribal communities living here. As different tribal groups have different traditions and customs associated with them, all the major festivals celebrated here are based on the religious and spiritual sentiments of the natives here.

Among all the tribal groups existing in Meghalaya, the Khasi community is one of the largest and has its own culture, religion, beliefs and identity. The Festival of Seng Kut Snem is celebrated in Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya. It is an annual indigenous festival held in the month of November.
The festival acts as a means of fun and entertainment for the Khasi Community as they sing, dance, play music and have great merriment. Sound of different musical instruments fill the atmosphere with fresh vibrancy. Kids, adults, men and women all come together to celebrate this festival and make it memorable.

Earlier simply a religious act, the festival of Seng Kut Snem has slowly grown in its popularity and entire Shillong waits for this festival year long. Not only for the locals of Shillong, but tourists from outside find it very attractive and interesting.

 Seng Kut Snem Celebration

Seng Kut Snem is the celebration to commemorate the renaissance and awakening of the Khasi community as a whole. The Seng Khasi was formed 117 years ago by 16 magnanimous young men who worked towards the preservation of the traditional beliefs and the culture of the Khasis and these men stood up against the British imperialism and strengthened the community to ensure that it deserves all that is there and to preserve the identity through the formation of Seng Khasi,” said Banteidor Rumnong, president of the Seng Khasi that was formed on November 23, 1899.

When asked about the hurdles faced by the Seng Khasi, he pointed out that conversion to other faiths had weakened the traditional faith in the beginning. “One of the threats, particularly in the early times, was the conversion to other faiths that led to the dilution of the culture, traditional beliefs and our roots,” he said and added that despite all odds the faith strived and fought for its identity.

R. Rynjah, culture secretary of the Seng Khasi, said people from Christian faith have come to an understanding and are now back to the traditional fold. “Some of them say they entered Christianity without understanding. It has dawned upon them that they are to preserve the Khasi culture and faith, we are born as Khasis and we will be Khasis,” he added.

Rynjah informed that every Sunday, there are speakers who talk on the traditional knowledge and wisdom of the Khasis. “It is a sort of Seng Khasi awakening movement. The movement has more than 300 branches all over Khasi-Jaintia.”

Through the celebrations of Seng Kut Snem, the Seng Khasi has upheld its aim of protection and preservation of the customs and traditions embracing all aspects of the Khasi way of life, which included traditional music and dances, games and amusements, Rynjah explained.
