Dev Uthani Ekadasi, is observed during the waxing phase of moon in the month of Kartik.According to Gregorian calendar Dev Uthani Ekadashi is observed in October-November month. Dev Uthani Ekadashi is known as Prabodhini Ekadashi.The famous Tulsi Vivah festival is performed on the next day of Utthana Ekadashi.On this Ekadashi it is considered purifying and meritorious to take a bath in the holy rivers or water bodies. Taking a religious bath on this day is more beneficial than taking a bath in any of the Hindu pilgrimages. Hence the observer of this vrat. Get up before sunrise and take a bath.
The occasion of Dev Uthani Ekadashi marks the end of the period of four months of inauspicious time. This time period is called the Chaturmas. The period of four months, before the Dev Uthani Ekadashi, is considered to be the sleeping period of Lord Vishnu. It is said that Lord Vishnu goes to sleep called the Yoga Nidra, on Devshayani Ekadashi and wakes up after the four month duration, i.e. on Dev Uthani Ekadashi.The Pandarpur Yatra is performed in Lord Vithal Temple in Pandarpur on this day.
Staunch Vishnu devotees observe a rigid fast on the day by skipping food and staying awake during night. Majority of the people take one meal mostly in the evening and visit shrines dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

The day of Devuthni Ekadashi is an ultimate way to reach the doorway of heaven. It is strongly believed that if one follows the day of Devuthni Ekadashi with severe devotion, he/she will definitely be gifted with Moksha and will be able to reach the heavenly abode of Devas, Vishnu Loka. The day of Dev Uthani Ekadashi is also believed to carry the boon to free the souls of a person's ancestors.
