About Vijaya Ekadashi
Vijaya Ekadashi takes place during the disappearing phase of moon in February – March. There are two Ekadashis in a lunar month. The greatness of this Ekadasi is mentioned in the Skanda Purana and observing of Vijaya Ekadasi helps in removing all the guilt associated with sins committed and also helps in attaining victory. It is believed that Lord Ram observed this Ekadashi before beginning his war against Ravana to ensure the victory of truth over evil.Vijaya Ekadashi is known as Pankoddhar Ekadasi in Odisha.Millions of Hindu devotees observe Ekadasi, which is considered highly auspicious by Lord Vishnu devotees. Significance Of Vijaya Ekadashi
This ekadashi is also called VijayA ekadashi Yudhisthira Maharaja asked, Oh Sri Krishna, please describe the Ekadashi that occurs during Magha Krishna Paksha.
Lord Sri Krishna replied, Oh Yudhisthira, gladly I shall tell you about this great fast,known as Vijaya Ekadashi. Whoever observes it certainly achieves success in this life and the next. All the sins of one who fasts on this Ekadashi and hears its sublime glories are eradicated. From the story we learn that even Sri Ramaa performed ekadashi vrat (for lokakalyan ) and practiced it as instructed by bakad Albhya Muni.
Rituals of Vijaya Ekadashi
It is believed that the result of observing Ekadasi fast is even more than the fruits earned by donating gold, land, cereals and cow. Lord Vishnu is worshipped on the day of Ekadashi. Incense sticks, lamps, Navedy, and coconut is used for worshipping the lord. On the day of Vijaya Ekadashi, seven cereals are established. The seven cereals include wheat, Urad, Moong, gram, rice, barley, lentils. The idol of Lord Vishnu is then established on the pot of cereals. A person should observe this fast for the whole day and perform Jagran at night by reading Vishnu Path, Vishnu Sahasranama.
A night before the fast day, Satvik Bhojan (simple food with no garlic and onions) should be eaten. After the night meal nothing else should be eaten. This fast is observed for 24 hours. Fast is concluded on Dwadashi (next day of Ekadasi) morning by gifting a pitcher full of cereal to Brahman. Observing this fast removes grief and problems. As per the name, Vijaya Ekadashi gives success to a person in difficult circumstances of life.
