Five things that can make your Diwali celebrations more Eco Friendly

Here are a couple of tips to celebrate Diwali in a safe and Eco Friendly manner.

 Light up without lighting up

Handmade diyas made of clay outside a potter's house. Diwali translates to a row or series of lights. In the past, this would involve family members lighting rows of earthen lamps and placing them around the house. With advancements in lighting, many folks have resorted to replacing the traditional Diwali lighting with electric lighting. While fairy lights and string lights certainly look pretty and brighten up the place, there is a certain charm to diyas that cannot be replaced. And they are environment friendly too! And they’re going to ensure that your electricity bill does not shoot up.

Avoid bursting crackers

Crackers are probably the first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of Diwali. What we sometimes fail to consider is the aftermath of bursting crackers. While crackers are certainly exciting, remember that the excitement is temporary. Try and recollect the state of the city streets after Diwali and you should be able to picture silver streaks on the roads and million bits of paper strewn all over. Do give a thought to the air and noise pollution they cause as well. If you must burst crackers, do buy them from one of the city police approved licensed shops. You could also opt for Eco-friendly crackers, these are made from recycled papers and make less noise as compared to the regular ones. While bursting crackers as well, do ensure that you follow safety measures. And don’t forget to clear up the mess the morning after.

Your old clothes could be somebody else’s new clothes

In many houses, cleaning up is the precursor to the festivities. At the time of cleaning itself, make separate piles - one for stuff that can be reused, and the other, of things that can recycled. Items like old clothes, books and stationery can be dropped off at an NGO or handed over to somebody who could reuse it. Here are a couple of places where you can drop off your old clothes. For those things that can be recycled, you could drop them off at a dry waste collection center.

Spare a thought for animals

Animals typically get very stressed with the loud noises and lights caused by crackers. Some pets may even hide under the bed for a good part of the festival. Try calming your pet down. Keep mild sedatives or home remedies handy. You could perhaps avoid doing activities that make loud noises - such as using the pressure cooker or vacuuming your house - to avoid surprising your pet further. If you have a pet that is extremely stressed out, consider heading out of town. You could also explore dropping off your pet off at a boarding that’s away from the city, and therefore the noise. Here’s more on how you can help your pet prepare for Diwali. Also look out for strays who might be on the edge. Children in their excitement may burst or throw crackers at them. Do advise them in the hope that they do not repeat it. From all of us at Citizen Matters, here’s wishing you a Diwali that is filled with lots of love, light and laughter. We hope these tips help you celebrate the festival of lights in an Eco-friendly manner.

Buy and use organic

It is inevitable that you buy sweet for your family and friends. What you could do to reduce the stress on landfills is ensure that the packaging that the sweets come in is biodegradable. Avoid boxes that come lined with plastic. On that note, here’s how you can eat healthy this festive season as well. Opt for organic colours to use in your rangoli. You could turn to your garden for flowers or even the kitchen for spices and rice powder for the rangoli. You could even wrap the gifts that you are giving in recycled paper or newspaper.

Dhanteras(Dhanvantari Triodasi) Festival History, Legends and Story

Dhanteras is a first day festival of the great and famous Hindu festival, Diwali which is the five-days long festival and celebrated in Varanasi and traditionally all over the India. Dhanteras festival is celebrated on triodasi of the Krishna Paksha (the dark fortnight). Here is information about  Dhanteras festival History , Legends and story.

There is an interesting story behind celebrating the Dhanteras festival. It is considered that, once upon a time, King Hima’s sixteen year old son was destined to pass away just by the snake-bite on the fourth day of his marriage. His wife was very clever and she did not allow her husband to sleep on 4th day of the marriage. She arranges some gold ornaments as well as a lot of silver coins and made a large heap at the doorway of her husband. She also made light with the help of numerous lamps all around the place of his husband.

When the God of death, (Yama), came to his husband in the appearance of a snake, his eyes got sightless by the dazzling light of the lamps, silver coins and gold ornaments. So the lord Yama could not get entered into his chamber. Then he tried to ascend on top of the heap and started to listen the harmonious songs of his wife. Early in the morning, he had to gone away without taking her husband. Therefore the very young and newly married wife had saved her husband life from the death. That’s why, the Dhanteras is also known as the Yamadeepdaan. Diyas or candles are kept blazing during the whole night in respect to the God Yama.

Another myth is, a long ago Gods and demons stirred the ocean to get Amrita or nectar, after many days the Lord Vishnu had came out on the day of Dhanteras having a jar of the elixir.

Dhanteras Story

According to ancient legends, the celebration of Dhanteras is attributed to the story of the sixteen year old son of king Hima. Predictions were made that he would die of a snake bite on the fourth day of his marriage.

Four days hence his marriage, his newly wedded wife, being aware of this prediction laid out all her ornaments along with coins made of precious metals of gold and silver in a heap at the entrance of her husband's sleeping chamber and furbished the whole place with lamps.

Then, all night long she narrated stories and sang songs to keep her husband from falling asleep. It is believed, that when Yama, the God of death, arrived under the guise of a snake, he found himself unable to enter the prince's chamber as he was dazzled and blinded by the light of the lamps and jewellery, and so he climbed the heap of ornaments and coins and listened to the melodious songs of the wife.

In the morning, he quietly went away sparing the life of the prince. In this manner, the young wife saved her husband from the clasp of death itself. Hence, this day also came to be known as 'Yamadeepdaan'.

Another popular legend also associates itself with this festival. It believes in the appearance of Dhanvantari (physician of the Gods and an incarnation of Vishnu), with a jar of elixir on the day of Dhanteras during the cosmic battle fought between the gods and demons, who had churned the ocean for Amrita or nectar.

How to Celebrate Dhanteras(Laxmi Pooja)

Dhanteras is one of the most important Hindu religious festivals that are celebrated around this time of the year. Also known as Dhanatrayodashi, the festival is observed all over India. It also marks the beginning of Tihar festival in Nepal. ‘Dhan’ means wealth and ‘teras’ means the thirteenth day of the moon cycle. The festival also signifies the first day of the five-day Diwali celebrations and falls on the thirteenth lunar day of Karthik Krishna Paksha, of the Hindu month of Kartik (October-November).

On Dhanteras, Lakshmi - the Goddess of wealth - is worshiped to provide prosperity and well being. It is also the day for celebrating wealth, as the word 'Dhan' literally means wealth and 'Tera' comes from the date 13th.

In the evening, the lamp is lit and Dhan-Lakshmi is welcomed into the house. Alpana or Rangoli designs are drawn on pathways including the goddess' footprints to mark the arrival of Lakshmi. Aartis or devotional hymns are sung eulogizing Goddess Lakshmi and sweets and fruits are offered to her.

Hindus also worship Lord Kuber as the treasurer of wealth and bestower of riches, along with Goddess Lakshmi on Dhanteras. This custom of worshiping Lakshmi and Kuber together is in prospect of doubling the benefits of such prayers.

People flock to the jewelers and buy gold or silver jewelry or utensils to venerate the occasion of Dhanteras.

Many wear new clothes and wear jewelry as they light the first lamp of Diwali while some engage in a game of gambling.

In order to make for this situation, Princess Chandrabhaga asked the prince to return back to his kingdom. Nonetheless, the prince insisted on observing the fast. The Ekadashi period started and everyone started observing the fast. People even kept vigil. But, prince Shobhana got very weak and could not stand hunger and thirst anymore. As a result, he died during the course of the night. However, due to his determination and influence of observing the vrat, Prince Shobhana was enthroned the king of Devapura, the kingdom of celestial beings. The city of Devapura found place at the top of Mandara Mountain. Conversely, the kingdom was only temporary as the prince had observed the fast only once during his lifetime. He told him that he wanted his wifes hellp to make his temporary kingdom permanent as she had been observing the Ekadashi vrat since childhood. The saint the visited the princess and retold his conversation with the prince. Princess Chandrabhaga got excited and with the help of Sage Vamadeva, she went to the temporary celestial kingdom of her husband. Thus, due to the power of observing Rama Ekadashi, the couple was reunited and the kingdom became a permanent one. Rama Ekadashi  is also referred as ‘Rambha Ekadashi’ or ‘Kartik Krishna Ekadashi’. It is a popular conviction that Hindu devotees can wash away their sins by keeping a sacred fast on this day.

Rama Ekadashi Significance

According to the scriptures, there was a king named Muchukunda. He ruled a prosperous kingdom and counted Lord Indra, Lord Varuna and Lord Kuber among his friends. He was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu and was blessed with a baby girl who was named Chandrabhaga. She was later married to Prince Shobhana who was son of King Chandrasen.

Chandrabhaga used to observe a fast on Ekadashi so she followed the tradition at her parent-in- laws house too. She asked her husband to keep the Ekadashi fast along with her. Shobhana used to feel physically weak so he refused to keep the fast, which made Chandrabhaga upset. He realized her dismay so he kept the fast, but soon started suffering from hunger and thirst. The prince could not survive the fast so he died before the morning.

By the virtue of Rama Ekadashi, Shobhana received a great but invisible kingdom. Once, a Brahmana of his wife’s kingdom went out to travel, when he came across the kingdom on his way. Shobhana told him, that by the grace of Rama Ekadashi, he received the kingdom. He asked the Brahmana to tell his wife abut his kingdom. Brahmana returned and informed Chandrabhaga about the whole event. Chandrabhaga who observed the Ekadashi fast since her childhood, converted his kingdom into reality by the virtue of her karma. The couple then lived happily ever after.
