Significance of Gangasagar Mela

About two to three lakh people come to this fair every year.It is believed that one pilgrimage to Gangasagar in one's lifetime is equal to a hundred other piligrimages. The proximity of the Sundarbans  breeds many dangers to the fair.Storms and tides disturb the fair almost every year. But the tradition goes on.

The Holy Dip

A dip in the ocean, where the Ganga drains in to the sea is considered to be of great religious significance particularly on Makar Sankranti when the sun makes a transition to Capricorn from Sagittarius, at which time this town becomes home to vast fairs, drawing visitors and renunciants from all over the state. The piligrims come for holy dip in the Ganges and offer water to the Sun God. The dip as they say ,purifies their 'self' and according to them, punya can be obtained thus.A special puja is performed which is offered to Sun God as a thanks giving for good harvest.

Til and rice being two important ingredients for this festival.people have a special rice-centric meal on this day.On this day, people come from all over India for a ceremonial cleansing in the river Hoogly. near Kolkata.

Gangasagar Mela at Kapil Muni Temple

There is a common belief among the locals that girls who take the holy dip get handsome grooms and the boys get beautiful brides. When they are done with the ritual obligations, they head towards the Kapil Muni Temple situated nearby, to worship the deity as a mark of respect. There are images of Gangadevi, Kapil MUni and Bhagirathi at temple.

Satyanarayan Vrat-About Shri Satyanarayan Vrat-Pooja-Aarti-Images

Shri Satyanarayan Vrat Puja is performed to seek blessing of God Narayan which is one of the forms of Lord Vishnu. The Lord in this form is considered an embodiment of truth. Although there is no fixed day to perform Satyanarayan Puja but doing it during Purnima or Pournami is considered highly auspicious.

Devotees should observe the fast on Pooja day. The Pooja can be done in the morning as well as in the evening. However performing Satyanarayan Puja in the evening is considered more appropriate as devotees can break the fast with Prasadam in the evening.

Shri Satyanarayan Vrat Pooja

Pooja Material

A book on the Pooja (Inconsultation with a Brahmin), a square platform(Chaurang),mango leaves, two new cloth pieces, kalasha, lord's idol or a photograph, turmeric, kumkum, panchamrut, six coconuts, prasad, four oil lamps, sandal paste, incense sticks, betel leaves, two garlands, areca nuts, turmeric pods, dry dates or almonds, camphor, offerings in form of cash or coins, tulsi leaves and flowers.

Pooja Procedure

The pooja consists of five parts. The first one deals with the timing of the vrat and the procedure. The other four parts describe stories of the greatness of the God. The stories convince the importance of the pooja. On the day of the pooja, it is required to fast and perform the pooja in the evening.

In a clean room, a new clean cloth is spread on an elevated platform(Chaurang) and rice-grains,about a kilo are spread on it,in the centre. A kalash(Copper pot) capped with a new cloth piece is placed and a small idol of the Lord Vishnu is positioned on it

The pooja begins with the lighting of the lamp and praying the God Ganesha, Lakshmi,Dikpaalakaas, Vishnu, Lord Shiva and Parvathi, Sun,the nine planets and Lord Indra.

Lord Ganesha and Panchaloka Paalakaas should be positioned to the north of the Kalash and can be worshipped through areca nuts or almonds or turmeric pods or dry dates. Then, the nine planets should be worshipped by placing areca nuts on betel leaves followed by Lord Indra and other Dikpaalakaas.

Later the Lord Satyanarayana's idol or image on betel leaf should be worshipped by Panchamrut (a mixture of ghee, milk, sugar, honey and curds) abhishek(sprinkle). At the end of the pooja, there is udvaasana, a formal way of concluding the pooja.
