Information about Mahamaham or Maasi Magham or Kumbakonam
Mahamaham festival is celebrated according to Tamil month of masi and according to english month february -march in the star of Magam in sauth indian town Kumbakanom Tamil Nadu states. It is an important day and annual festival for Tamilians around the
world.The festival has archaeological and epigrahical evidence.Magam, is one of the twenty seven stars (Nakshatras) in the Hindu
astrological system. A major ritual on the day is the bathing of Temple
Idols in sea, pond or lake. Once in twelve years, Masi Magam attains
special significance and then it is known as Maha Maham. Next Maha Maham
is on 9th March-2028.Idols of gods and goddess that are worshipped in
Temples are carried in a procession to sea shores, rivers or ponds.
Pujas and rituals are held here and thousands of people gather to
witness the auspicious event.Once in twelve years, when the planet Guru (Jupiter) enters Simha Rashi
(Leo sign) a larger festival is celebrated at Mahamaham tank. Huge
crowds gather at Kumbakonam to have a dip in the tank, along with saints
and philosophers.
The great Mahamaham festival, attracting lakhs of people
from far and wide, is celebrated in honour of Lord and it takes place
once in 12 years. It is celebrated on the conjunction of the moon with
the Maha nakshatra and Jupiter crosses one Rasi or sign in about one
year. It comes to Simha Rasi or Leo every 13th year and it is considered
specially sacred. It is believed that on this auspicious day the tank
receives supplies of water from the Ganges and eight other holy rivers
and all the deities are said to remain present here on that occasion. The Tank is located in the heart of Kumbakonam town. It covers an area
of 6.2 acres and is trapezoidal in shape. The tank is surrounded by 16
small Mandapams and has 20 wells inside the tank. The names of the
wells carry the name of Hindu god Shiva or that of Rivers of India.
Govinda Dikshitar, the chieftain of Ragunatha Nayak of Thanjavur,
constructed the sixteen Mandapams and stone steps around this tank.
Significance Maasi Magham Festival
This Masi Magha is called Maha Magha, as it happens only once every 12 years when Jupiter comes into the sign Leo. The Full Moon in the star of Magha, along with Jupiter in the sign Leo, is very powerful. Jupiter adds more auspiciousness to this day, and the planet Rahu will be along with the Moon and Jupiter. This day can even reduce the afflictions caused by Rahu, Ketu and Kala Sarpadoshas.

Ritul and Legend of Legend of Maasi Magham Festival
One of the important rituals on this day is the procession of idols to
the seashore or ponds for a holy bath. Long processions from different
temples arrive at the sea shore with the idols of Lord Vishnu, Lord
Shiva. Idols from Shakti temples are also brought to the seashore. Pujas
and other rituals are held at the sea shore and thousands of devotees
throng the sea shore on this day to offer prayer.
The most popular legend associated with this festival is related to Lord
Shiva. It is believed that Lord Shiva appeared as a child before King
Vallala of Tiruvannamalai who was an ardent devotee. The king had no
child and Lord Shiva promised to perform his last rituals. The king died
on a Masi Magam day and it is said that the Lord performed his last
rites. Lord Shiva also blessed the king by saying that whoever bathes in
the sea during Masi Magam will merge with him and will attain ‘mukthi.’
It is believed that every year the Lord visits the sea to perform the
last rites of the king.
