About Hartalika Teej Vrat

Hartalika Teej is one of the prominent festivals celebrated by women in order to honor goddess Parvati. During the process of Pooja, womenfolk not even drink a single drop of water and undergo a rigorous phase of fasting. An important fact about Hartalika Teej Puja is that it is followed by both married and unmarried women for their good future marital status. The married women go for the fast and worship of the goodness in order to ensure the blessings and a healthy life for their husbands. The unmarried girls undergo the process of Puja in order to get husband like Lord Shiva.

During the festival, an immense numbers of performers and artists from different parts of the country get together and present their artistic work to respect the deity. It is significant to note that during the process of Hartalika teej and puja, the idol of goddess Parvati is escorted by a large number of camels and elephants. A grand fair is also organized by the devotees where the sales of different items are done and the entertainment accessories are displayed. Jewelry and new cloths are also worn by the women and the application of mehendi (henna) is also done on the hands and feet.

During the Hartalika Puja, women distribute coconuts to their female friends and relatives. They also express their gratitude towards Goddess Parvati with sweets, green vegetables and fresh fruits.

Hartalika Teej VratKatha

A small story lies behind the celebration of Hartalika Teek vrat. Legends explain that after the death of Sati Devi, Lord Shiva started ignoring the entire world, including Goddess Parvati without noticing her devoted love. In order to get her husband’s attention, Parvati underwent severe penance for several years surviving only on grass and fruits. Eventually, Lord Shiva got pleased by the love and affection of Parvati and finally accepted her. Hence, this festival is commemorated by all women, whether married or single. While the married women observe this for achieving health and happiness for their respective husbands, unmarried young girls and women observe the fast in order to be blessed with a loyal husband, like Lord Shiva.

Similar to Karwa Chauth, women observe a ‘nirjala vrata’, that is, severe fasting without eating and drinking anything. On the day of Hartalika Teej, a pandal (small puja house) is made using banana bark and leaves. Goddess Parvati is adorned with new clothes and set in the pandal. A Shivling is made from clay and placed alongside Parvati. Women beautify their hands and feet with mehndi (henna), a unique feature of Hartalika Tritiya celebrations. They dress up in new green clothes and new jewelry. In certain regions, married women visit their premarital homes and observe the fast along with their parents and other family members. They put on green bangles and a golden bindi.

Stories of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva are read out and listened as they are considered auspicious on this festival. In the evenings, special prayers are arranged for worshipping the deities. Thereafter, traditional songs and dances are performed which are actively participated by relatives and friends. Fresh fruits and vegetables are brought specially for this day and offered to Parvati. Special delicacies, such as rice patolis and sweets, are made on this occasion. Preparations made from coconut take special place.

Hartalika Teej Pooja and Muhurt2016

Hartalika Teej Puja is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati who are considered to be the best-married couple as per Hindu religious beliefs. It falls on the third day (tritiya tithi) of the Bhadrapada month as per the Hindu calendar. Hartalika Teej Puja is somewhat similar to the Karvachauth festival as women keep fast for the long life of their husband. Unmarried girls also observe fast on this day for getting a good husband. This festival is celebrated with colorful rituals and customs followed by a special prayer to all deities especially Goddess Parvati in the evening.

About Hariyali Amavashya

Hariyali Amavasya’ is a monsoon festival celebrated on Amavasya or a" No Moon Day" of the Shravan month in North India. People mainly worship Lord Shiva on this very day for wealth and prosperity and pray for a very good agricultural season.

It is one of the most enjoyable fairs for the people of Udaipur. The fair is celebrated for three days, out of which one day is especially reserved for the women. Women can be seen shopping, enjoying various games, rides snacks etc. There are colors all around, loads of rides, lots of stalls and full on entertainment.

Phool Bangla at Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan is world famous among Krishna devotees. Apart from Krishna temples various Shiva temples also arrange special Shiva Darshan on Hariyali Amavasya day.

Hariyali Amavasya falls during Shravana month which corresponds to Ashadha Amavasya in Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu where Amavasyant Lunar Calendar is followed. Hariyali Amavasya is also known as Haryali Amavas and Hariyali Amas in Gujarat.

Hariyali Amavashya Celebration

On this auspicious day, people worship Lord Shiva. Their prayers are directed toward hoping for a fruitful monsoon season which will yield good agricultural produce. Shiva temples across the country arrange a special day for Shiva Darshan.

The entire population of Udaipur celebrates the festival of Hariyali Amavasya with great enthusiasm. This is primarily due to the fact that the concept of celebrating the festival on a grand scale is believed to have originated from the city itself. It is said that it was under the reign of Maharaja Fateh Singh, that the famous fair was first organized to mark the occasion of Hariyali Amavasya.

The Maharaja, taking notice of the water wasted around the city, decided to construct a reservoir to fulfill the water needs of the people. This reservoir came to be known as the Fateh Sagar reservoir and it was to celebrate its successful completion that the fair was first organized on the no moon night of the Shravan month.

The fair not only showcases the local Rajasthani traditions and customs but also offers numerous activities for entertainment such as folk songs and dances, wrestling matches etc along with the usual rides and games.

In Mathura, devotees of Lord Krishna visit the Dwarkadish temple and offer prayers. In Vrindavan, people visit Banke Bihari temple to do the same. Here, the Phool Bangal Utsav ends on the day of Hariyali Amavasya. A mass ‘puja’ is organised in Jaipur too.

Hariyali Amavashya Special Fair in Udaipur

The Udaipur Municiaple Council drew in a revenue of Rs. 3.17 Lakhs from the auction of the stall spots at Fateh Sagar and Saheliyon ki Bari.
All of the 238 stall spots were successfully sold at Saheliyon ki Bari while the UMC was unable to sell 60 stall spots, out of 237, at Fateh Sagar.

At this juncture, the West Zone Cultural Center has announced to organize a two-day cultural event. It will be held on 19th July at Moti Magri and on 20th July at Saheliyon ki Bari.

The Narayan Seva Sansthan has promised the management of water at the Hariyali Amavasya Fair.
Five teams have also been constituted to collect an amount of Rs. 50 to Rs. 100 from temporary vendors in the Fair. The teams will cover the area from fathpura Police Station to Saheliyon ki Bari’s entrance, from UIT Bridge to the office of the Divisional Commissioner and from Hitawala complex to Sukhadia circle.

About Dhanteras

Dhanteras being a festival of wealth, also has a significance of purchases of new and expensive possessions. Many Indians set up their businesses, launch new projects, hold housewarming, and set wedding dates on this day.Dhanteras is regarded as an auspicious occasion to buy some gold or silver articles. Many people shop for new utensils for their household.

Diwali is preceded by the festival like Dhanteras, and Choti Diwali, and followed by Govardhan Pooja and Bhai Dooj.'Dhanteras' or'Dhantrayodashi' , takes place two days before Diwali , in honour of Dhanavantari, the physician of the gods and an incarnation of Vishnu. As such this day of five-day Diwali festival has a great importance for the rich mercantile community of India. The legend of Samudramanthan has the importance of these celebrations.

On this day, houses and business premises are renovated and decorated.Entrances of the houses are decorated with lovely traditional motifs of Rangoli designs to welcome the Goddess wealth and prosperity. To indicate her long-awaited arrival, small footprints are drawn with rice flour and vermilion powder all over the houses.Lamps are kept burning all through the nights.'Lakshmi-Pooja' is performed in the evening when tiny diyas of clay are lighted to drive away the shadows of evil spirits.'Bhajans'-devotional songs-in praise of Goddess Laxmi are sung and 'Naivedya' of traditional sweets is offered to the Goddess.

Dhanteras Story

According to this story, when the gods and demons churned the ocean for Amrut or nectar, Dhanavantri, the physician of the gods and an incarnation of Vishnu emerged carrying a jar of the elixir.Another interesting story about this day is of the sixteen year old son of King Hima.As per his horoscope he was doomed to die by a snake-bite on the fourth day of his marriage. On that particular fourth day of his marriage his young wife did not allow him to sleep. She laid all the ornaments and lots of Gold and silver coins in a big heap at the entrance of her husband's boudoir and lighted innumerable lamps all over the place. And she went on telling stories and singing songs. When Yam, the god of Death arrived of those brilliant lights and he could not enter the Prince's chamber. So hr climbed on top of the heap of the ornaments and coins and sat there whole night listening to the melodious songs. In the morning he quietly went away. Thus the young wife saved her husband from the clutches of death.Since then this day of Dhanteras came to be known as the day of 'Yamadeepdaan'and lamps are kept burning throughout the night in reverential adoration to Yam, the god of death.
